Default Newbie cleaning question

Hello, just bought my first handgun, and not sure if this is the right place to post this question so sincere apologies if not!

Have my new M&P Shield 45, and I was planning on cleaning it before use. I read the owners manual and it didn't mention the preferred brand/type of solvent and lubricant to use. Want to use the right supplies as I begin the journey, would appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

I clean with Hoppe's, lube with Ballistoil. Stay away from WD-40. Ok?

Default newbie cleaning questions

I would recommend Mpro-7 cleaning supplies such as their gun cleaner, bore cleaner, bronze cleaner lubricants and their grease. I have been using their products with outstanding performance. The Military, law enforcement agencies are just a few of the customers they have been using their products. I recommend the products to my students for the cleaning portion of the classes. Check out their web site for additional information.

For the mechanical parts of the gun you could use literally any type of oil that won't gum up over time. Hoppes bore cleaner followed by oil of choice in the barrel. You can easily get carried away by all the fancy products that claim to work miracles. Just go get yourself a small bottle of CLP, a decent bore cleaner and an old rag.

you will likely get a different answer from each reply! - any good gun/bore cleaner and oil/lube should do just fine unless you live in extreme climates or use your firearms daily.

there are several good brands of CLP - which are cleaners, lubes, & protecting oils - Breakfree is a popular one - it is a good lube & protectant and just an ok solvent/cleaner but it if you don't shoot a lot & only want 1 product try one of the CLP products. I usually use hoppe's solvents to get most of the fouling out then finish up with breakfree

The Hoppe's #9 solvent and the Hoppe's Elite (low odor) solvent are good . Hoppe's Elite Gun Oil and RemOil are classic oils.
But don't get all hung up on " specialty" products , most are based on common products just gussied up and priced higher.
I've used WD40 as a solvent in a pinch. A great bore cleaner is a homemade product called "Ed's Red Bore Cleaner", 4 common products and the stuff works just as well as any store bought. Do a search of the name...a gallon can be made for under $20.00.
CLP's work well also. What I'm trying to say is just about any product will work, most are good, don't feel like you have to pay $20.00 for a 4 oz. bottle for it to work.
Home made CLP, based on Ed's Red , a 50/50 mix of Dexron ATF and low odor mineral spirits . Want a gun lubricating oil , a 50/50 mix of Dexron ATF and K-1 kerosene .
Some of the store bought products are low or no odor and I use them for that reason...the wife can smell things I can't....but the homemade stuff works just as well.
