Default Model 36 5 screw

So I have an issue stripped my chiefs special 29xxx serial 5 screw I lacked the tool to get the spring back in so I sent it out to a local smith he got all the pieces springs back in BUT the hand wont stay in place , he claimed that the grove in the frame had been filed < i looked it over several times no signs of filing < I remember somewhere on U tube a guy mentioned that you needed to Play with the side plate to get the hand to set into the grove on the side plate. At the present time the hand will slip out and not advance the cylinder ( falls to a 45 degree angle ) any ideas of where I am screwing up ? Thanks in advance

It sound like the hand spring located in the trigger is not installed properly to tension the hand and keep it forward. Or it's missing. Either you or the smith may have let the spring fall out of the trigger, when the hand was pulled free. Look for a short coil spring with two legs.

The hand does not align with a groove in the side plate. The sliding bar hammer block does.

Thanks that must be the issue since the hand fall back about 90 degrees ----------- you mean the trigger spring on the trigger guard ? or is there a different spring under the hand legs? thanks so much

No, not the trigger spring, it's the hand spring which is located inside the trigger. It may still be in the trigger but the tension leg is not tensioned against the smallest pin on the end of the hand.

Did you remove the hand from the trigger when you stripped it? If so the little hairpin spring "inside" the trigger hollow slipped off. You will need to remove the trigger, and see if the spring is still there. If not order one from S&W, Brownells, etc. Probably $.50. When you go to install it, see if there area any you-tube video's so you can see first hand. I use a small screwdriver filed down to fit exactly inside the cavity of the trigger to push the one leg into place. You'll think you need three hands, if you have a small bench vice it can help. The hand will be very positively held forward and spring into place when properly installed.
