5 Screw Info.
Looking to replace the rebound slide spring on my pre-Model 14. Was wondering if there is anything that I should know/do to remove the side plate as opposed to the newer 3 screw models? Thanks.

Not a gunsmith..... but have taken side plates off for parts replacement....
My offerings:
1. Use a screwdriver that fits the screw heads properly. Gunsmith's models found on Brownells etc.
2. Don't mix screw heads. Keep the correct screws for the correct holes.
3. Might want to have a proper tool for replacing the part. Modified screw driver.
4. Take your time and work slowly. Don't force anything.
Too basic? Simplistic? Just offering what I found that works. And I try not to do this too often. I'm always rather leery of taking the Smith and Wesson (or any gun) apart....Oh! and don't pry the sideplate off. Use hammer handle to hit frame until the side plate comes free.

Thanks Aircrewman, but I've done this before, only with a 3 screw model. Trying to find out what if anything is different with the 5 screw models.

Wasn't sure.. seemed like you did know but erred on the side of too much info. Targets Guy said it! Best of luck with your 5 screw! And congrats on ownership! I was able to buy a pre-14 last year. Very nice revolvers.

USSR
The only difference is the 5 screw has a screw at the top of the Side Plate instead of the "hook" that catches the frame on the inside. The 5th screw holds in the spring and pin for the Cylinder Bolt so you do not have to concern yourself with removing that one.
DO NOT pry off the Side Plate - hit the Grip Frame with a plastic faced hammer or screwdriver handle and it will pop off. When reassembling, make sure the Hammer Block is in the upward position and sort of slide the Side Plate onto it.

Simple answer, no. Just one more screw.
And the 5 screw, 4 screw, and pre lock 3 screw guns are simpler than the newest 3 screw guns with internal lock/MIM parts which have a few extra parts that tend to pop out when side plate is removed.
And pre war 5 screws are the easiest because they do not have a hammer block safety sliding bar.

That was what I was looking for. As I said, I've done this before, so I know the routine. Just wanted to be sure there wasn't anything special or different with the 5 screws. Thanks guys.
