Hi:
I just joined today after finally buying a beautiful Model 41. I believe it was built in 1988. I took it to the range for it's test and to zero it with my preferred ammo. I noticed the beautiful (new looking) grips impede the operation of the safety. Has anyone experienced anything similar? I pulled the grips to be certain the safety works -- it does, but the grips are not allowing it to move.
ANY RECOMMENDATIONS? I hate to take sandpaper to it if I don't have to.
AND: in which direction do i turn the sight adjustment screws to change point of impact?

Ref. the offending grip panel, I would just remove enough material from the area that is rubbing on the lever to restore proper function.

Just a FYI on my newer model 41 I can not say the safety is very easy to operate anyway, It's very stiff. I do not need to use it much so don't real mind

After removing JUST ENOUGH wood to allow proper operation of the Safety, you can apply some Poly Urethane to the raw wood to restore the Factory look and protect it. If you or any of your friends do not have any Polyurethane around, you can use a little of your Wife's clear Nail Polish on it.

Great thoughts and input - thank you. I believe these were replacement grips ...... they have the S&W logo but, perhaps, the safety has changed over the years in thickness. I also agree with "RULE 3" that even with the grip removed it isn't the easiest to operate ...... is that typical?

I wish Pachmyer made rubber grips for the M 41. I take the wood grips (stocks) off all my guns if I can as I hate to ding up the pretty wood ones. Plus down here in the swamp I sweat a lot and the rubbers are better to hold on to,

I have the wraparounds on my Ruger competition and they are great!.

The safety on the model 41 is famously small, stiff, and hard to engage. I believe the reason is that the safety is not really needed on a target pistol. In a match you would step to the firing line, load the pistol, shoot you course of fire, clear the pistol, and step back under the eye of the range safety officer. No need to ever place the pistol on safe. Even when I'm plinking for fun, it's the same: out of case, load, shoot, clear, back in case.

My M41 is a TAL12xx series from about 1986.

In all the years I owned a Mod 41, I don't think I ever used the safety. It wasn't loaded until I was at the target station, and never loaded after I left the range.
