Default Chip in frame of hammer channel

I think this is the right sub-forum. I have a 686-5 that has what looks to be a chipped edge of the frame where the sideplate meets. Right side of hammer channel. I figured it was just an abuse of a previous owner and have for the most part ignored it.

Then while perusing gunbroker, I saw a 625-(5?) that had almost the same defect.

Is this a defect that comes from the factory, or something from an abusive sideplate installation, or maybe working the action with the sideplate off?

First is mine, second is a pic I lifted from the (now expired) auction.

I don't have that on any of my guns but I have seen pictures just like yours, & worse.

As I recall, one person said his pistol came from the factory that way. Whether it's just a machining flaw or from firing the pistol with the side plate off I can't say.

Hopefully it's something you can go back to ignoring though.

that is from some backyard smith or owner dry firing the gun with the side plate OFF. Probably while trying to do a trigger job .The hammer lifted up from the frame and hit the spot on the frame .

I figured as much. I have to keep an eye out when buying used, so I don't get a bubba'd shooter. Thanks for the info.

Not much you can do about that.

Fortunately, it is mostly cosmetic and should not affect performance. This is how we learn to inspect out prospective purchases in the future. Unfortunately, sometimes we get a little burned along the way - but the good part is you won't make the same mistake again.
