Hammer issue..
Just got a used 1980s? 44mag 629 that has a recessed cylinder but not a pinned barrel.. It looks in great shape no marks.. One issue that a friend noticed.. If you hit hammer that is in full cock it will fall forward like it was shot.. What is worn or broken ?? The trigger is smooth as a babies butt...

Called "Hammer Push Off". Most of the time this situation can be corrected with a Jig, a stone and a KNOWLEDGABLE GUNSMITH. If the parts (engagement surfaces) have been "monkeyed with" you will need a new Hammer and or Trigger depending on what was done. If the parts have not been messed with by Bubba, then chances are a good GS can fix it in about 30 minutes.

Thank you....
Will this get worse with time? Is it an issue that needs to be addressed ? I kind of like it..

It is dangerous! And yes it gets worse with time but can also be the next time you cock it that it decides to fire on its own so SAFETY FIRST!
Don't worry, you will still have your butter trigger when this is corrected properly
And I am assuming you mean push on the hammer not hit the hammer?

Shoot any gun enough and parts will wear. If your Revolver has Push-off now it will only get worse as time goes on. Sometimes guys stone the engagement surfaces and they don't realize that the case hardening only goes a few thousandths deep. When they stone that off the steel wears quicker and the result is push - off.
IMHO there is NO REASON to mess with a S&W Hammer and Trigger engagement surfaces as there are PROPER ways to get a great breaking trigger without doing that. Not saying yours was messed with, but I would NOT be surprised if it was.
Oh, before you bring it to a GS, check to see if the Main Spring Strain Screw has been backed out or the screw has been shortened too much. With inadequate spring pressure Push Off can occur too.

You have provided with good info - check mainspring first and if you note your location, there may be a factory armorer close that can fix the push off in a few minutes IF no kitchen table gunsmithing has occurred...

I would suspect that the rebound spring has been altered (cut) or replaced with a lighter, aftermarket one. If the hammer and trigger have not been altered or damaged, and you find that the rebound spring is not factory, you may be able to restore proper function by replacing the rebound spring with a new, OEM one. (assuming that the mainspring and mainspring strain screw are also unaltered)
