Smile S&W Model 10-5

Hi:
Recently cleaned up a Model 10-5 5" that came from a LEO property room.
Very poor storage with exterior rust spots/minor pitting.
Inside of weapon appears very clean/like new.
The bolt/cylinder catch tip (part the extends though the frame) is a separate part from the main part ??
I had a K frame back in the 1950s that also had the condition.
I am thinking (?) caused this ? The inside parts appear in-used/new.

Opinions ?

Jimmy
