new 66-8 crown question
I just wrote a long post and accidently x'd the wrong window off.
To make it short, I went out to get me a handgun, after going to a few places I ran across this beauty and my heart fluttered. So I bought it.
I did do a quick look around on it, besides the muzzle end, I have only heard good things about S&W so I never thought the crown would look iffy. I'm gonna stop blabbing, here are some pics.
Opinions, as I am novice when it comes to stuff like this. Honestly if It shoots straight it shoots straight. I still want it too look pretty :P.

I'm not sure from your picture, but the crown does not appear concentric with the bore. Only way to really know is to shoot it and see what it does. What does the forcing cone look like? There have been some issues reported with them.

The Crown could be better, but I would just enjoy the gun. I have several Smiths, and I could pick out something on every one of them that I wish was a little better. I definitely understand the Heart fluttering! Enjoy!

S&W used to make a nice smoothly rounded crown that was a thing of beauty. This is their new crown design which I find ugly.

Thanks for the replies every one ,
Here are some pics of the forcing cone, besides the mark under it, Which honestly I never noticed till now, what is the mark? I bought the gun "new" and I know smith does a test shot, but I have yet to fire it.
About the concentric part, im not too sure what you mean.

The forcing cone looks OK if it's the same depth all the way around. For best accuracy the muzzle crown needs to be recut. If it shoots good enough for you the way it is, don't worry about it.

M66-8 crown
Kind of hard to see good detail on your muzzle & FC pics. My experience with the forcing cones on the two & three-piece barrels has been very positive. Typically better than the one-piece barrels.
The muzzle on the two-piece barrel revolvers, like yours, typically have no chamfer & usually have a slight burr at the opening caused by the tool the factory inserts into the rifling to screw it into the frame.
You didn't say how it shoots? If there are no issues just continue enjoying it.
If it bothers you it can be chamfered.

My new 69 4" has a crown like that. Shoots fine. Try it first.
The dark marks under the forcing cone are "stains" from the test-fire at the factory. No problem.

I have a 66-8 and it's the most accurate revolver I own..and I own quite a few.. It's a great gun..I had it ordered without knowing about the two piece barrel.....Wondered about it until I shot it.....Incredibly balanced gun.. Didn't even feel recoil with 129 gr plus p 38....Sweet shooter.

If it bothers yo find a steel ball bearing that has about the same radius or curve of your current crown. First hold some 320 or similar emery cloth tight on the bearing and rub it around on the crown working in multiple directions. Then go to an auto parts store and get some course valve lapping compound. Coat the muzzle and roll the ball in random patterns. Eventually it will get polished.
But, here is an interesting fact. I have cut down a few different barrels. I of course wanted a factory looking crown. In studying my S&W crowns from my 44 top break to my latest there is nothing uniform about them, even in guns of the same period, finish, angles and radius all a little bit different from one to the other. How they transition from barrel to ramp etc. I have a little pile of barrel stubs I keep around just for comparison when I am working a muzzle on my lathe.

Here's mine
Here's the crown on my 4.25" model 66-8 not a thing of beauty but it sure shoots great. People forget the these new Smiths are tools ,not tools that are pieces of art work like they once were.

How often do you stare down a barrel of a gun?

I suspect that a lot of what you are seeing are powder stains from the test shots. Yeah, just 3 round will do that. Get a Lead Away cleaning cloth and you may find that will wipe right off.

That's the way most of them look like. It'd only take them a couple minutes, at most, to clean up the muzzle with a light camfer. Nothing wrong with a good looking tool.
Once you've had enough it's time to take matters into your own hands.
