Default Target Trigger Switch from Standard on 581?

In a weak moment, I bought a K frame target trigger, .500 wide. It's stripped, but I can use pins, spring and hand from the service trigger. I believe triggers, but not hammers were the same for K&L frames, as I've seen target triggers on some L frames. .500 wide hammers weren't available for the L frames, IIRC, just service and .375? Question is, would you swap em out? I'm familiar with stripping and reinstalling the guts, but I'm SKEERED! Tolerances are critical. Timing could be thrown off and I can think of mucho other things! Think you'd try it? I used to bring revolvers into the factory and you could wait and they'd be done with type of job. However, I believe they had a drawer full of triggers and hammers and could try different ones until everything was kosher. Risk may not be worth it, but I'm curious as to your thoughts. I'm leaning to if it ain't broke, don't fix it. My thanks.

Working on a S&W is pretty simply as long as you have some basic tools, mechanical ability, and are good with your hands. Look at it this way, once you do it you will know how for next time. Smith Revolvers are all basically the same - regardless of frame size.

There are videos on the Midway-USA sight, Youtube video's, and the J. Kuhnhausen Shop Manual that is available. Before making a decision to do anything, why not watch some video's and then determine if you want to take the plunge.

If & when you do this you might want to go slowly, take photo's to back yourself up, layout parts methodically, and never force anything! Make sure you have a Bench Block and a good set of punches as well as proper Screwdrivers.

I'm trying to get my head around the logic of taking a fixed-sight combat revolver and installing a .500 wide trigger specifically designed for precision single-action bullseye target shooting. Just don't get it??
I can't envision a worse trigger choice for double-action combat shooting.

I would rather have a smooth combat trigger instead of wide target... but if you are as familiar as you say, take out the in place trigger and replace with your new one. Rotate it back and forth while observing anything that may be amiss. If you have proper clearance and you replace parts from one to the other, then it is a good chance you will be fine. Where a novice gets in trouble is changing hands, messing up the timing and not knowing what to do then.

I have to agree with your assessment. I was paying more attention trying to steer the guy in the right direction to work on S&W's than the actual sense of what he is wishing to do. After reading your post I have to agree.

Default Target Trigger in 581

Thanks for the replies folks. I get the combat revolver idea, but I use it mostly for single action shooting at the range, like most of my guns. But, I'm afraid mostly of mating up the contact surfaces of the .500 Trigger and the hammer. Might result in push off or failure to cock altogether. Boils down to do I want to take that chance and foul up a perfectly fine firearm. I have done this! I've done a jack leg job or two in 55 years, yessiree. Thanks again for your input

Triggers for the K and N frames were the same, so the L frame should not be ok. Go ahead and swap them out. Worst case is you swat it back and sell the target trigger if it doesn't work out. You've done the hard part, buying the trigger.

There are many good S&W trigger swap tutorials on Youtube,
Once you have done it a few times its very easy.

On a side note Im also a bigger fan of the smooth combat trigger over the wide serrated target trigger even in long tube target guns.
