K frame barrel and cylinder contact

I purchased and took delivery of a very clean Model 10-8 3"

it appears to be hardly shot.

upon closing the cylinder, I heard a funny clanking metal to metal noise.

I soon discovered the edge of the cylinder is making contact with the edge of the barrel when closing the cylinder. the contact has peened the edge of the barrel.

what is the proper fix and is their a quick fix (shim) to drive the cylinder rearward?

I want to shoot this piece and barrel to cylinder gap might be too tight once I start shooting as it builds up some residue.

Not a gunsmith but I don't think they should touch. An expert will be along shortly.

You can use ordinary feeler gauges to accurately measure the problem. First, hold the cylinder rearward as firmly as you can and measure the gap with the feeler gauges. Typically should be .004" to .012".
You have already said it is zero when the cylinder is forward.
The difference is cylinder play, due to wear between the yoke and cylinder.
A gunsmith can either stretch the yoke or add shims to reduce this play to around .001", which will make the gap about what you measured when you held it rearward.
For a proper shim installation, the interface should be trimmed square before final shim selection. Brownells sells the tool and shims.
In the off chance there is no play but somebody has improperly installed a barrel, then the installation must be completed correctly.

I am still in the process of moving. All my **** is still in boxes or storage.

A piece of copy paper will slip in with the cylinder at rest. I do feel resistance.

I folded the copy paper and pushed the cylinder rearward and the thickness of two will not go.

I did a google search and copy paper is about .004"

the cylinder does show scaring that its in contact with the barrel when it rotates.

If you have .004-.008 gap when the cylinder is fully closed but contact when opening/closing then I'd look real hard at a sprung yoke.

Pull the hammer part way back and rotate the cylinder. If everything looks square then the cylinder is being supported by the cylinder pin but makes contact other wise you could have a gun some idiot sat in front of a TV snapping the cylinder closed.

You might check the yoke retention screw, to see if it is tight. If a 10-8 has the screw with a spring and plunger, check the spring.
