Default 686-4 bolt question

Looking at the numrich replacement bolt, they have two listed. One is mim, the other isn't. Does it matter? My gun is a 686-4, so I'm guessing it's mim. The part that's in the gun doesn't look exactly like either, but more closely resembles the mim in shape. Although it looks like flash chrome in color. Will either one fit? Or should I just order the mim, and be done with it?

I would look at the parts schematic for your particular model ((686-4) and get the exact part # that originally came in your gun. Numrich or Midway should have the schematic in their websites.

You could give S&W Customer Service a call. Have your model number and serial number ready before you call, they will need that info...... 1-800-331-0852

The bolt may require minor fitting. I believe either the stainless or MIM part will fit.

Yes, the schematic at numrich shows two possibilities. One is a mim, one isn't. The thing is, mine isn't an exact match for either. Although it is close. At this point, I'm leaning towards the mim part.

I have 3 x 2 1/2" 686-4 models and none of the 3 have any MIM parts.

They all have a hammer mounted firing pin and old style cylinder release thumb piece.

All shipped before 1996.

OP, are you referring to the bolt or the cylinder stop?

It's the bolt aka cylinder latch.

Well, just to be clear as to the correct part you need, there is no "cylinder latch" per se, in the S&W revolver. The parts are shown below.......

#22 is the "bolt".....# 67 is the "cylinder stop"

It is definitely called a bolt. Numrich has it in their description as " bolt aka cylinder latch". I've referred to it as a bolt. And it is part number 22 in the diagram. Although at this point it's a moot issue, as I've ordered the part from numrich. I decided to go with the chrome, since that's what it is. My hope is that it's a bad angle on the picture of the part in question, and that there's not an issue with the fit.
