Default S & W Non-Warranty Service

Hello All....

I have a Model 60 ND that I picked up used a couple of months ago off one of the internet sites...something I normally don't do.

Cosmetically, the gun is in terrific shape but the timing was off on a couple of chambers and the B/C gap seemed to be a bit inconsistent.

So, I contacted S&W and received a return shipping label. Gun was received at S&W on July 20th (during the 2-week holiday break) and was given an 'RMA' number on July 25th. In addition to the necessary repairs, I also asked that it be given a general check up while in S&W's custody.

As I am planning a couple of weeks of travel and didn't want the gun showing up while I was away, I contact S&W Customer Service for an update.

I was told that the gun is at the PC Shop awaiting a repair estimate and that current turnaround time is 3 months.

As many of the S&W Service Center issues that I read recently on the forum seem to surround warranty repairs, I was just wondering what you all think this service may end up costing me.

My "good deal" may turn out to be less so after the investment for service......

Well, that is like "how high is up" or "how long is a short string."
I screwed up a revolver I bought new after shooting it 2 years in competition with reloads. I told them the whole story and the "guess" was I would have to pay for a new yoke.
It came back no charge. Wait and see; good luck!

Last year model 29, 45 to check it over and range test, 25 in parts (cylinder stop and hand), 72 for labor. They get 90 an hour, I had .8 hours. 13 freight, 154 total (close to 3 months)

I sent in my 5" 27-2, which I bought new in 1974 in for a tuneup around 2 years ago. After around an estimated 30k-40k rounds through it, I had some forcing cone erosion and slow carryup and a bit of endshake. They changed out the hand and cylinder stop and rebound slide and turned the barrel and recut the forcing cone. IIRC, that all came out to a little under $200 including the shipping and they did return the changed out parts too. I want to say it took them around 2 months to get back to me with the estimate on repairs and after paying them it took about another month for them to finish the work and ship it back to me. I was well satisfied with the work done on my old 27 and it shoots like it did when new now.

I sent in a model 19 to be refinished. It had a few rust spots and the bluing was VERY thin in multiple places. The cylinder had rotational and horizontal play. It had .012 b/c clearance. They reblued it with the high luster blue, turned the barrel back and set b/c at .004-.005 and took ALL the slack out. It locks up like a fine safe. It was around $400. 3 months to the day it was back. That $400 included shipping both ways. I was NOT disappointed. Barry

I had them swap a 3-inch barrel for a 4-incher last year. I sent the near-new 3-incher in the box. They charged a half-hour labor $45 + the $45 estimate fee (I assume to recover the shipping label to them) and $45 return shipping - total was $135. Their work was near perfect - and they didn't add any more marks or scratches to the used M64. They didn't say anything on the invoice - but it looks like they reblasted the top strap and replacement barrel - as they now match...

Well.....almost 12 weeks to the day that I sent my Model 60ND in for non-warranty service and received estimate in the mail today......

$152.56 of which $27 was for parts (cylinder stop and hand).

“Estimate” is $45.

Labor will be $67.50 to install parts, adjust end-shake, timing and test fire.

Balance is tax and return shipping.

I guess it could have been worse......

I would say that your wait time is awful - but the price isn't too bad. The "Estimate" fee, I thought, covers the return shipment back to you. But, maybe it covers the shipping label for getting it to them. Either way, the M60 is a pretty nice little handgun. My farm boy finances have only allowed me to have one in a lifetime!!

Well.....received my Model 60 back from the mother ship today.

Just a few days shy of 16 weeks from when I sent it back for service.

Lock up is tight as new and timing is spot on. Also looks like they fired a cylinder full of rounds to test function prior to returning back to me.

From what I can tell from my initial once-over, the $150 repair bill was money well spent.

Now, just need some time to get to the range and give it a good workout.
