Parts
I've got an original Model 10 with case hardened parts. Seeing how Google is useless witj anything conservative related, I'm turning to experts. My local smith is getting me in the business. I need a list of replacement parts to work on before I actually mess with the originals. Anyone know where I can find a list of parts that I'll need to pick up? I know where to buy them.

Not sure what your issue with Google and gun parts is but try Numrich and Sarco

Numrich has a list of parts. A diagram of every part and a # next to it. Below are going to be the actual parts for sale.

First off, IF the original parts are still good, WHY replace them? If no one has cut through the Case Hardening and or ruined them there should be no real reason they need replacing unless the Revolver has been shot to Hell & back in which case it's not worth restoring.
Secondly, any Gun Smith worth his salt SHOULD have his own parts sources and be able to replace any part that needs to be replaced. It's hard to believe any professional GS can't get parts for a M10. Just my .02 cents of course......

Only the hammer and trigger are case hardened.
If I understand your post correctly, you are a "Gunsmith in Training" and you are looking for a list of parts that you need to practice on.
Personally, I would ask the Master that is going to be training you what parts will be used in your training. After all, we have no idea what he is going to be teaching you.
What you might want to do is look to the auction sites and buy a few of the complete parts sets that get sold off after the frames are destroyed. You can usually get a full set for what a single trigger or hammer will cost you from Numerich, Brownells, etc.
The models do not matter since most all S&W parts are not model/frame specific.

That's the thing about Master Andy. He's not helping me. And I understand why. He knows I'm a gunophile and my yearning to learn the trade, so he wants me to learn the hard way. Problem is, as much as I love S&W, I don't know what parts to get. As for buying new parts, that's preferred in my opinion. I know they won't go to waste and would be worth the money. I'd wait days for an auction, or buy from MidwayUSA and they'd be here tomorrow. Spending money isn't an issue. I've already broke down and got a lathe of their preference on the way.

Why do you need parts? Anybody can replace old parts with new parts.
Buy some old guns and take them apart. Learn the parts that wear and why. Learn the function of each part and what/why the particular metal was chosen for the part. Buy some pieces of stainless steel, tool steel and cold rolled. Drill and tap each and learn how they act and why. Work with them on your new lathe, belt sander and files. Make something challenging with your lathe. Learn why you're breaking bits or taps and getting a bad finish on turned parts.
The price of a new lathe is only part of the package. You'll probably spend an equal amount on tooling for it.

The tools and machines I have down. I'm buying new parts because of the age, originality, and look of the parts. I'd rather learn on new than screw up original parts. You don't take a small block Chevy and immediately put a 500 shot in it, do you? No. Again, I could buy old guns, yet I'm stuck waiting auctions. I'm not waiting on 20+ day auctions to end and waste time bidding when I could have parts TOMORROW.

There is very little polishing needed on a S&W so there is no need for parts until a failure occurs. Your mentor is not doing you any favors by not assisting - so what good is he? Buy one of the manuals available for smithing S&W before you waste any money on parts you don't need. As I recall from my armorer's training, there are 53 checks that can be done to a S&W to diagnose any possible issue. Parts work in conjunction with each other so buying a part and doing whatever to it will be of no real use.

It was they way you phrased it. I didn't understand what you wanted till Tinhack rephrased it.
Why not just buy ALL the internal parts? It's not exactly a ton of parts or money.
Master Andy doesn't sound like much of a "master" if he can't even point you in the right direction. When you show up to a class do they just hand you a pencil and say figure it out?
