Barrel Compatibility Question
Would a Model 625-3 barrel be compatible with a Pre- Model 25 N-frame: specifically, a Model of 1955?
Thanks in advance for your kind consideration!

In short - NO. Barrels back then were Pinned and Barrels today are "crush fit". I would look for a period correct Barrel.

The pinned barrels were crush fit too. There was just a groove in the barrel for the pin to go through. The groove would allow the barrel to turn 5 to 10 degrees either side of vertical if the shoulder on the barrel was not up against the frame. I think it would fit or could be fitted. Then there is the issue of a SS barrel on a blue frame, but some like that look.

Unless the threads are different, which I doubt, then yes it could be made to work. Pinned barrels had a groove cut in them (as Toolman pointed out). Cutting a groove would require all of about 10 minutes on a mill, or better yet, simply drill the barrel after it's fitted and put in the pin.

I've personally fitted lot of barrels........
I've never crush fitted one..... I torque the barrel to the frame.
Over torqueing leads to thread damage and cracked frames.
As others have said, the cross pin is fitted after the barrel is installed.
Use the correct size drill & reamer.
Getting satisfying results comes from setting the job up correctly.

Have done it several times, no problem. As far as i know all n frames are the same thread, 1917 to 29, to 625, all the same.

All the same thread .670 x 36 to the inch. They are torqued the same as the pinned barrels. Have taken off and installed barrels on both pinned and un pinned. If you can figure out the spot for the pin it is just narrow shallow groove across the tread area that allow the pin to pass over. I doesn't actually hold anything firmly.
But, my question is why? are you making a pinto ordo youhave a bad barrel?

During a discussion with Frank Glenn, he informed me that the barrel pin in S&W revolvers hasn't served the purpose of actually keeping the barrel locked tight for quite some time. Meaning way back in the day the pin actually did that job, but during more modern times the pin was of little importance.

OK, I stand corrected. Thanks guys....... Didn't think the threads were the same. I suppose you could even Mill the top and drill the hole and pin it while you are at it, but Stainless on a Blue gun?
