Default 29-3 (44 special) rear sight needs to be lower

I own a 29-3 with the 8 3/8 inch barrel. came with target everything and white outline rear sight front ramp with red insert. I have lowered the rear sight as far as it goes and still have to put the front sight way at the bottom of the notch as well as then aiming about 6 inches lower on target with 44 specials. Now the odd thing is that it seems as if full house magnum loads go exactly as aimed in the center. Anybody else have this huge difference between 44 special (which I shoot more of) and 44 magnum loads?

Yep. My m29 with 8 3/8" barrel at 25 yards shot about 8" high with light loads and dead on with full blown magnums. Never did change the sights . Just kept that one around for shooting magnums.

Thanks for the reply! I was not sure if it was just me or the gun. I have become pretty well acclimated to it now and am able to be pretty darn accurate with it long as I remember to adjust my aiming point accordingly.

My experience with 8-inch guns is the same as Old&slow's. Mercifully, 8-inch .44s are pretty tolerable with full-charge loads.

The difference in recoil and bullet speed dictates where the muzzle is pointed when the bullet exits the barrel. The muzzle rises in an arc in response to the forces acting on the gun. The bullet will exit the barrel in different parts of the arc with different loads.

Now for comparison purposes my model 14 with 8 inch barrel it makes no difference between +p hollow points and a 2.5 grain hbwc both hit same spot. The case length remains the same though. Huge velocity difference there. I assume the shorter case length combined with half the velocity in difference between 44 special and 44 mag is more pronounced making a difference not seen in some of the other calibers??

Never noticed a difference with my 6 1/2" m29 , just the 8 3/8".

Wonder if the same thing ( 38 spl. vs .357 ) happens to a 8 3/8" m27 ??

Also recently noticed about a 3" difference in POI with my two 9mm M&P Shields with 147 gr -vs- 124 gr.
Would have never thought it would happen in a 3".

I too can tell a fairly big difference between bullet weights in my model 639. The 9mm 115gr. vs. 124gr. have totally different points of impact.

Most 44 mags shoot high using heavy for caliber bullets with slow velocity. If you use some lighter bullets bullets going faster, your poi will definitely drop.

Practice your follow thru holding that barrel on target after the trigger pull.

will practice my follow through, thanks for advice. I like trail boss in the 44 spc. cases, going to see if my bullet mfgr. has any 200 grain instead of the 240.
