A container of a size large enough to totally immerse the pistol,... and of the same material as you received the fluid in.

I like to use some of my wife's pyrex baking dishes.....Said I "like to";..didn't say I had the "nerve" to.

I use a stainless steel pan with a lid I bought at a restaurant supply store that would have normally been found in a steam table. I put some plastic wrap over the pan and top with the lid to keep the fume levels down in my work area.

Just go to Walmart or similiar and get a glass baking pan about the size you need. Make sure it has a lid that snaps on.

glass casserole dish sounds good, if you can get it at a yard sale cheap.

I went with a metal coffee can, big enough to place the frame and slide all the way in. Synthetic ATF and Lamp oil 50/50, let it soak with the lid on.

A big pickle jar might also be a thought.

Be careful with plastic containers. Kerosene and Ed's Red bore cleaner (which has acetone in it) both pretty much destroyed some old plastic food storage containers.
I now use heavy duty disposable aluminum cooking pans , they come in all sizes , turkey to mini loaf pans, and can be covered with aluminum foil for a top. Nothing eats these and they are cheap.
Lamp oil is a fancy name for kerosine and an excellent cleaner.
If you ever want to mix up a batch of Ed's Red cleaner , you must not use synthetic ATF, use Dexron II, IIe , III ATF , GM Spec. D-20265 or later. Synthetic will not mix with the other ingredients ! Don't do synthetic ATF.

Acetone and ATF 50/50 is the best penetrating oil there is. DO NOT use synthetic ATF for the reason stated above. It won't mix.

Didn't know that, good to learn.

When I said 'synthetic ATF', it was the Dexron stuff, and I just assumed it to be synthetic.
Does it not mix with synthetic since it's a blend of petro and non-petro based?

I'm aware that lamp oil is kerosene, I had some cheap laying around, and a load of pistols after a range trip. I wanted to do the cleaning economically.

If your using kerosene, mineral spirts or some low volatile product Rubbermaid containers with lids will work fine. If your using high volatile solvents like acetone, lacquer thinner, Toluene Etc. then you'll need glass or metal.

I used whatever ATF you would get at walmart to mix with acetone and the two wouldn't mix. However, when I needed to apply it, I would just shake it well and dispense. Still did it's job and penetrated an old rusted-in water heater anode top. Zipped right off after.

Where would one get regular ATF(non synthetic), and is there a premium cost for it?

I use a glass pyrex casserole dish my wife gave me years ago that she never uses. I have always liked glass as it is pretty much impervious to any chemicals used for guns.
