Default SW22 Takedown screw stuck in barrel lug

Just bought a new SW22 Victory today from the gun store, got it home took it apart, cleaned it, shot 200 rounds through it and upon trying to take it apart when I got home I noticed the takedown screw wasn't coming out correctly. I found that the barrel lug and take down screw were somehow mated together. I was able to get the frame taken off the barrel without stripping any threads, but now I have a barrel lug still in the frame with the takedown screw in it. The barrel lug is not in the barrel, where it should be. I cannot get these undone without destroying the barrel lug. This is extremely frustrating because the barrel lug threads and takedown screw threads are not
opposite of each other.

This is very irritating given that this pistol is not even 6 hours old! Please help! How can I separate the barrel lug and takedown screw? I am planning on loctiting the barrel lug so this does not happen again

I am beginning to regret my purchase. Any help?

Thank you

I strongly advise you to take it to your local gunsmith to be checked out. Don't try to force anything apart.

I fixed it last night, didn't get a chance to post back on here until now. I very, very carefully used a pliers covered in a rag and held it while I turned the takedown screw. Once I got it undone I put lots of blue loctite on the barrel lug and torqued it down with the same pliers. The barrel lug is made out of a very hard metal because there was no deformation to the threads or any other part of the lug. If it comes undone again, I will use the same method to get it unstuck and then permanently fix the barrel lug to the barrel with either red loctite or some sort of epoxy in the threads.

Glad you got it fixed.

Still not sure what the issue was. On my SW22 the takedown screw goes through the frame into the bottom of the barrel. Once the takedown screw is out the barrel and the firing chamber come off in one piece.

Default Me Too

My SW22 Victory is 4 weeks old. On the 3d time take down for cleaning the lug came loose from the barrel with the take-down screw still stuck in it. I sent off an email to S&W to find out if I should ship it back for repair. I don't want to attempt a self-repair as I'm afraid of cross-threading the lug. Surprised to see this happen on an otherwise fantastic pistol.

I haven't had the opportunity to handle one of these yet, but I have had High Standard Victors for over 30 years, and I seldom ever removed the barrel for cleaning. A pull through every 500 rounds or so, and a little break free lube has kept it running well all these years. The original barrel or a custom match barrel I used were probably not removed from the frame over a half dozen times over that 30+ years.

Call SW and send it back to them

I have had my SW22 apart at least 50 times and never have had any problems with the screw that holds the barrel coming loose. The take down screw tightens just as expected and has never come loose at the range.
Take down effort is always the same.
If either screw is coming loose during a session, it is best to contact S&W to get it serviced.
It is my belief that the threads are such that when the correct torque is used, the screw stays put.
I have never used loctite or a lock washer as some have suggested.
Also remember that the take town and barrel screws are different sizes.
And I cant understand how undercover could get the frame apart with the take down screw still screwed in the barrel.

Happened to me with brand new SW22. It is on the way back to Smith & Wesson as of yesterday, CS lady heard "Barrel lug is stuck in the frame and out of the barrel," and immediately said it has to come in for repair. I had gotten the takedown screw out far enough to separate the frame and barrel assembly, but being new to this platform, I didn't realize it was whacked until after I cleaned it and tried to reassemble. Takedown screw and barrel lug were inseparable.

Not all that familiar with the pistol in question here, but from the feedback it sounds to me you are not alone with this issue. I hope that by now S&W has come up with a viable repair and modification for this pistol. Let us know what they do when you get it back. I would definitely send it back to the Factory and not let a LGS touch it - might void warranty.

Same thing happened to mine. What I've done was to apply red loctite on the barrel nut and oiled the threads on the take down screw and using two nuts I screwed in the nuts on the take down screw & then screwed in the take down screw to tighten the barrel nut in the barrel, set aside for 24 hrs then using a pair of wrenches I removed the lock nuts. It's been on nice & tight ever since...

Thanks, that's what I thought about doing. I just have to get the barrel lug and take down screw separated without damaging it.

Hi. New member and owner of a Victory. I tried to disassemble it for the first time today and was met with the same
Predicament: the barrel lug/bushing is stuck in the frame with the takedown screw. I’m debating whether to send it back to S&W (i already have the return label for shipping) but I’m impatient when it comes to waiting 4-6 weeks to get it back, or to just do what you did. So my question is, how hard was it to try to separate the TD screw from the barrel bushing/lug? And I’m also afraid that it light damage the thread. So how did you do it? Thanks for your assistance in this matter.

I have the same problem with the barrel lug stuck to the takedown screw and the gun disassembled but unable to reassemble. I have contacted S&W and am waiting for a response. Really surprised this has happened with some regularity. Love the pistol though. It shoots better than I do.
