Need help with 19-3: Extractor Star Issue
Howdy,
I bought a 19-3 a few weeks ago, cleaned it, then put it in the safe and went on vacation for a few weeks.
Arrived home last night, opened the safe today to fondle my new beauty and the cylinder would not open. VERY difficult, but I finally got it opened. At first I though there as something under the extractor star. Nope. Then I noticed the "plunger" on the extractor star (see photo ... I may have the terminology wrong) is stiff and won't budge. I can't push it in with my finger. On all my other S&W's the "plunger" is easy to push in. Any idea what's wrong and how do I fix it?
Thanks!

I would guess 'varnish', from WD40 or some other product, or perhaps accumulated shooting debris has accumulated inside the cylinder assembly. If you are able, dissassemble and thoroughly clean the interior of the cylinder assembly, and the yoke. The center pin spring may also be broken or compromised.
You might also check the front locking lug for the same condition. Many times, old lubricants and debris can freeze or inhibit proper movement of the front locking lug and spring, especially if the firearm has been in storage for a long period of time.
If you have to soak rather than dissassemble, be sure the product you use will not harm the nickel finish.

I agree with Armorer951 however, when you cleaned the revolver, did you remove the extractor assembly from the cylinder? If you did, check to see if the everything was reassembled properly. If you're not sure of the assembly sequence, send me a private message with an email address and I'll send you a diagram showing the proper assembly.

As usual, armorer951 hit the nail on it's head. Although it dosen't seem to be the case in your situation, a bent extractor rod will also cause this problem. Just remember, if you decide to remove the extractor the threads on the rod are backwards. IE: right is loose, left is tight.

Why is the extractor different from the cylinder?

OP here. Many thanks for the replies.
I just ordered a gunsmith screwdriver set so I can remove the cylinder assembly without buggering up the screw. This gun is just too darn pretty to mess up. Needless to say, I did not remove it when I did the initial clean.
A few more data points:
The cylinder appeared to open & close normally when I inspected the gun before buying. The same when I cleaned it with M-Pro 7, then a light coat of oil. The gun wasn't very dirty at all.
With a great deal of effort, I can push the "plunger" down with my thumb. When released, it sloooooowly creeps back out.
OldChief, thank you very much for your offer. Will PM you.
And so to work ...
