Cylinder Stop Question

I just replaced the cylinder stop on my model 67. I fit the ball to the cylinder notches and then filed the stop to time it with the trigger.I measured the thickness of the ball and it was 0.007 inches thicker than the old ball.With the revolver back together timing is great ,double action fire is great and lockup is tighter than before.The problem is occasionally when I push the thumb piece and try to open the cylinder it is hard.Can the ball thickness be a little too thick? The binding does appear to be due to the tighter fit of the new stop as compared to the older one.

I've never seen a cylinder stop make the cylinder hard to open, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. Check for dirt under the extractor and loose ejector rod, etc.

If the timing is correct, I wouldn't remove any more material from the sides of the ball of the stop right now. The stop ball should be fit to the smallest notch in the cylinder, (they are not all the same), and a little gauge should be left so that there is free movement in and out of the stop slot in the cylinder.

What you could do if you haven't already, is very slightly crown and polish the high side of the ball, or the top edge on the frame (left) side. This sharp edge should be slightly broken or crowned, and the crowned edge then polished. You just want to remove the sharp edge and polish....a very little goes a long way. If you have a ceramic stone, you could rub it over the high side edge 3 or 4 times. This will crown AND polish the sharp edge. The right side, or sideplate side of the stop should not be crowned, but left sharp.

Thank you for shaking up the muddy water in my head! I fit everything but I left the left side sharp.Now it is working well again.
I did set the thickness to the smallest notch I just forgot to polish the side of the ball that was needed.
Toolguy,none of that was the problem! If ever an odd problem occurs with revolvers it will always happen to me!
