Default No blue finish...

Seen a S&W Model 10-5 with no bluing, standard 4 inch barrel, round butt and marked MPDC with the serial number on the grip. It looks like someone removed all the blue! I am thinking about purchasing it. If I do, would it be best to have it blued or just leave as is?

I suppose it depends on what it costs you to acquire the revolver and what you intend to use it for. A good commercial blue job can cost between $150 and $300 depending on the prep and polish. I think S&W prices for a refinish fall somewhere in the middle of that range.

If I were able to buy the gun for $200-225 and intended to carry it or use as a truck gun, I would probably spend for a low end blue job. If it was just a range gun, rust can be prevented with oil or wax.

I've never tried to do an entire gun with cold blue, but others have and are happy with the results. There are home bluing procedures that are time intensive but give an excellent finish.

I would leave it as it is.
If you decide not to purchase the ugly duckling let me know. I'm retired from MPDC back in the day when the Model 10 was standard issue, been looking for one for years.

Might it be a nickel finish?

Just my opinion of course but I'd PASS! Unless a firearm is rare or super collectible (M10's are all over), it's better, cheaper and less hassle to just buy a better one. It will save you money and aggravation in the long run! Most times a "bargain" turns out to be a hassle!

You could also do a low cost "paint" type epoxy finish with something like Cerakote or Lauer Duracoat.

These finishes are reasonably durable.
Bare steel will rust quickly and no oil will prevent that if you're not fanatic about keeping it coated.

If all of the original finish has been removed, how was it removed? Chemical strip or with abrasives? Just the exterior or interior surfaces as well? Is it free of corrosion inside and out? I'm always leery of someone's project gun.

This.
Or if you get it for a song you could do it the cajun way and get a can of flat black Rustoleum Bar b que paint for $4-5 per can ans spray her up. Perfect pirogue gun!! Can't tell you how many rustoleum single shots shotguns I have seen lying in the bottom of many bateaus.

If there is anyone in your area who blues guns, you might see if he will just blue your gun without any prior polishing. Good polishing is what runs up the price, the actual bluing process is very simple, pretty much just cleaning the parts and dunking them in the bluing salts tank. You can do the disassembly and reassembly yourself. Otherwise, you might use one of the spray and bake teflon finishes or the Lauer Duracoat spray, although it is a bit expensive. But there are even other options like DIY rust bluing or DIY phosphating.

Bateau is the French word for boat.

This M&P was a basket case when I got it.
After working on it I threw some cold blue on the barrel and cylinder, and did a fake color case hardened finish to the frame.
Not great, but it looks much better than it did, and the cost was negligible.

It actually looks better in person, believe it or not.

What kind of barrel is that? Obviously not original to the frame.
