A photo would help-- it could be a Regulation Police, or it could be a Hand Ejector, and those two don't take the same grips.

Welcome to the forum.

Your 32 is from the early 1920's, a 32 Hand Ejector built on the I frame if it has rd butt grips. And if it's a factory finish, it's nickel plated instead of chrome.

So you need pre war hard rubber or walnut grips in the original pre war length.

If it has the rebated backstrap rd butt grip frame with sq butt grips, you have a 32 Regulation Police.

Rd butt Service grips with rd tops:

The 32 Regulation Police grips with rebated backstrap and square butt grips as shown:

You'll notice none of the walnut grips in the 1920s have medallions.

Jim, I'm curious how you arrived at that dating. I have an RP serial 392099, and it shipped 12/1923. I would have guessed early 20's for whatever the OP's gun is. What did I miss?

The trend of submitting a question without an accompanying photo or photos is getting me down. Is there nowhere a newbie or long time resister can go on this site to get a brief tutorial? As a non techie I have been fortunate to have a Son to show me the way as taking and sending photos is one of the few things I really enjoy doing on the computer. It aint that hard folks, it is mostly intuitive, just try it or find someone to help you out. You know what they say about a photo, a 1000 words, ya da ya da. . Sorry for the rant but I do see less and less submissions with out photos which I usually enjoy. Get with it!

Yes, there is: To IDENTIFY your Gun >

Click on the link and it describes the information needed to identify a S&W.

Hi Andy,

How I arrived at that was by crossing my eyes I guess! Read it as a 5XX,XXX number.

Thx for catching that, I'll update my post.

Whew! I thought it was going to be some sort of "well, you see, S&W did an out-of-order number run in 1951-1952, and I just happen to have all the numbers memorized."

I'm thinking that he was asking about how to post pictures.
