Default Screwdriver size

What size screwdriver fits the side plate screws on a model 10-5? The slots are smaller than a 10-7. I want the correct size and my set doesn’t go small enough. Thanks.

I just took a surplus small flat tip bit I had & filed it down until it was the size I needed & leave it in my "gun tool box" just for my revolvers.

Whatever size fits the slots, even if you have to grind one to fit! Screws are not sized by model, but by whoever is the current supplier and whatever the current philosophy is concerning sloth width. It is not possible to say that in any particular case a "Jones bit #37" fits a certain model! Older models do tend to have narrower slots, but a 10-5 is hardly "older" than a 10-7.

I use a multi-tip S&W screwdriver I got from Brownell's. There are four tips, and they've handled everything so far, both old and new. I also have a fancy "gunsmith's screwdriver set" with about 30 tips, and not a one of them fit the sideplate screws.

Don't trouble yourself with the size....... Older Smiths have smaller slots than the modern ones. Screw vendors have made them to different spec's for Smith over the years. Just make SURE which ever gun you are working on at the time you get a properly fit one.

You can go on Brownell's website and look at the 4 piece Bit "set" they sell for the Smith Revolvers. The smallest one (sorry, too lazy to go into the Shop now to look ) is the one for the Sideplate screws - but that being said, I've actually ground my own go get a better fit for some of the older versions.

Oh wait I have a photo .......... If you can read the numbers on the block, the smallest one in the top line for the S&W is the number (#120-1 I believe) (at least for most).

The other's I ground to fit specific Revolvers.

I have found that the Brownell 150-2 works for me in the older side plate screws and the 150-3 for newer models. I'm just an amateur.

I bought the 4 bit set from Brownell and ordered the 150-2 bit separate. I also like the Law Enforcement magnetic handle. Good luck.
