Default Broke Hammer Nose on 10-7.

First time ever on any of my Smiths. I know it can be replaced, but I tried a semi target Hammer in my parts, so I tried it. Got lucky, it worked perfectly. Only problem was that I was 40 miles from home and it was the only gun I had with me. I've heard it's an easy fix, but I didn't feel confident.

Not a difficult part to replace. Over the years I have broken several of them, particularly on my high mileage competition guns. As an armorer,, back in the day, I saw several broken hammer noses on training guns and occasionally duty weapons. It happens. With a little research I am sure you can find information on how to change it, or take it to a competent gun smith if you are uncomfortable trying it yourself.

The big issue on replacing the hammer nose is properly flaring/staking the rivet. I ended up making a small bench plate with a short, shaped piece of (broken) drill to act as a backer for the staking.

I have replaced several hammer noses. I place the hammer on the anvil side of my vice, insert the rivet and then use a center punch to flare the rivet. I tap on one side, then flip the hammer over and tap the other side, flaring each side of the rivet a little bit at a time.

Some models have a hammer nose spring so be careful removing the broken nose.
