Default Mystery screw

No, this is not about a rendezvous in a dark alley. I bought some guns and items out of an estate recently and found this screw at the bottom of a box. It is 2 inches long.
I know that the right person can ID this machined little beauty. I'm thinking a stock / action screw on a long gun. Any ideas?

Looks like one of those if you needed one,
You would have a problem finding one.
I’m going with rifle stock into action or barrel.

Whatever it's for, looks like it's inserted up to the keyway limit and then the finely threaded "thingy" is tightened onto it. Joe

Looks like a fore end screw out of a Remington 742.

ExRanger, I think your right on the money. There is a 742 in the collection, but it's not missing a screw and functions well. Probably an extra.
I knew we had the smartest people on this Forum.
