Default 34-1 yoke screw?

A buddy of mine picked up a blued 34-1 4" but it's missing the yoke screw.

Looking on Numrichs under 34-1 I didn't see it listed.

Checked under 31-2 and it shows they are available.

Question to the experts...are these interchangeable between the two models seeing they are both "J Frames"?

Thanks in advance.

No:

The 34-1 has the old style screw which is the same size as the other sideplate screws. It has to be fitted to retain the yoke properly. It's simple, if the yoke binds with screw installed, just file off from the screw length until the yoke works freely. Try the next screw in the sideplate, it may work fine. Just buy another side plate screw with the domed head for any model hand ejector; screws are interchangeable.

The 34-2 introduced the new yoke retention screw; it's larger diameter and has a plunger and spring to retain the yoke, replacing the smaller fitted screw.

With reference to that other thread:

But once the yoke shaft button has been fitted to a screw at the factory, it rarely needs fitting again because the smooth screw pilot tips are a pretty consistent diameter (within reason). So when replacing a screw in a used gun, the length of the screw is the only 'usual' variable. That's why loosening the replacement screw allows the yoke to work properly. It just needs slight fitting of the length.

During fitting (or re-fitting) the screw is not modified. Modifications, if necessary, including fitting of a new screw to an existing yoke button, are made to the yoke button, not the screw. Length of the screw and pilot at it's end has nothing to do with the actual fitting of the interface, as the contact between the screw pilot and the button of the yoke is on the side of the pilot itself, not the end.
Improperly shortening the screw can also result in the pilot not reaching the button of the yoke, resulting in the yoke not being held in place properly.

armorer,

Thanks.
I'm sure that's the S&W training.

The yoke screw is the same and same part # as the other crowned head (domed) screw right behind it, and yet they're seldom interchangeable in my experience.

I've had good luck with a few screws that were a bit long (probably mixed up by a previous owner with one of the other sideplate screws unknowingly). This does not apply to the newer style yoke retention/front sideplate screw. I have not shortened the screw but have very gently and slightly radiused the tip of the screw so that it ceased to bind in the slot in front of the yoke "button" that allows the capture of the yoke by that screw.

Default info

Thanks for pointing out the details.

I'll try and find a screw and let my buddy fit it to the revolver.
