So I’m working on a 1905 that is toast. No finish, out of time, etc. I’m going to rebuild it with a gunbroker parts kit ( its .32-20 and I got a .38 special kit/ no collector value so ...no guilt) I’m going to do this rebuild step by step with my son, or rather make him do it and it will be his first .38...anyway it needs stocks..I ordered some off eBay from Thailand , but not from jwarun..from another one. The medallions on these all look “cheap” and they look just plain. So for this one I hit rewind to my childhood years of model building.

I then took some black paint (rustoleum or testors will do) and added it to a small amount of paint thinner/mineral spirits
What you are doing is making a black wash. This is used in modeling to fill/highlight etched areas/recesses. I thinned it out a little for the medallions. I wanted that a little thicker so as to be darker. For the checkering I thinned it out more. It will flow all through the checkering. When covered you can wipe with your finger or paper towel to lighten the washed areas. And it ot overflows it’s so thinned it simply wipes off.
Resulting in grips that don’t look so brand new and the details can be seen
