Who's doing caliber conversions on model 28's?
I am going to build a N frame 45 Colt revolver out of a model 28 and need to know who is doing this type of conversion these days? Thanks.

You can try Andy Horvath at Diagonal Road Gun Shop in Lagrange Ohio. He did one for me.

Mark Hartshorne (Pinnacle High Performance) converted a beat up and bubba'd 28-2 into a 3" .41mag for me a year or two ago. I provided the gun, a titanium .41mag cyl and a 4" 58 barrel and he took care of the rest. His work is top notch.

The conversion from .357 to .45 Colt is a "been there, done that" thing to me. I converted a 6 inch HP to .45 colt in 1981. There was a gunsmith in Delaware that would ream the cylinder and bore and sleeve it to .45 caliber. I shipped the cylinder and barrel to him and for $80.00 he did the job and sent it back. Reassembled it worked like a new revolver. (remember this was 1980 before Smith made 25-5s) The biggest problem was it was a bear to shoot. The lightweight barrel made the gun really buck even with factory ammo (again this was before Cowboy action loads). One other thing, factory round flat nose ammo was longer than the cylinder. Reloads with semi-wadcutters were the way to go. As soon as S&W started making 25-5s I traded off the Frankngun and bought a 25-5. The heavy barrel really helped. It has to cost more to convert to .45 Colt than to outright buy one. If you were going for a none manufactured caliber (38-40 etc) I could understand the expense and time.

He converted a Model 53 .22 Jet to .327 Federal for me last year... He rebored the original barrel and rechambered the original .22 LR cylinder to .327.
Work was perfect and turnaround time very good compared to many other custom Smiths some of whom are years backlogged...
For a N-frame .357 conversion to .45 Colt you may want to see if you can find a 29-2 cylinder as the cylinder on the 28 is a little short for some popular bullets. I had a local guy convert a 27-2 to .41 Magnum and used a Model 58 cylinder I got in a parts set off ebay. If the original 27 cylinder had not been so pitted from rust I would have made the gun .41 Special instead.
