Default In need of Barrel Replacement service

Gents-

I have a M&P 4" pre- model 10 (not a Victory) commercial with the large ejector knob. It came to me with a bulged barrel. It shoots "OK" but I have since acquired a new in paper replacement barrel which appears exactly the same, sans the SN stamped on the underside where the ejector rod resides.

I am soliciting replies from members who:

a) have had similar projects successfully completed. Please tell your story, reccomend your smith, and talk about what you spent.

or

b) any knowledgeable forum members qualified to take on my project.

Of course, I would prefer to avoid super costly shipping unless the price is right on the labor.

This year, I'm looking to clean up and finish project guns I already have.

Somebody please help.

Thanks in advance.

Any well-equipped gunsmith with experience performing a revolver barrel change should be able to perform the work. The main need is having the proper fixtures so that the frame is not torqued out of being straight with the barrel being unscrewed from the frame (you gunsmiths out there can laugh at my description and can recommend a shop in the OP's area too ).

Clark Custom would be a good choice. They are one of the few major revolver shops left. Of course there are several individuals scattered around the country who are good revo smiths. Maybe one of them is close to you.

Default Barrel replacement

Funny this thread should come up.

I was on the phone last night with a Gunsmith here in Maine about doing a barrel swap. Have no experience with him, but from our conversation he seemed very knowledgeable and even asked if my gun had a large knob ejector rod.

Glad to give you info if you PM me.

Default barrel Replacement

It is not hard to do with a little patience and proper tools which you can purchase from Brownells. The fixtures will set you back about $175.00 along with a good vice. Also, the S&W Revolver's Shop Manual 5th edition by Jerry Kuhnhausen will illustrate what you tools you need and step by step procedure. First, you will have to acquire a replacement barrel. I replaced my barrel on a S&W model 10-5 with a 5" barrel that I damaged by enlarging the take down pin on the cylinder lock under the barrel. Once you successfully replace the barrel, you will need to check bore/chamber alignment. Those tools can be purchased at Brownell's. A good gunsmith will probably charge about the same in labor fees aside from the replacement barrel. If you do not intend to use the tools again, then I would have a well experienced gunsmith complete the task. I probably will not need the tools I purchased for the job, but I had a great experience in accomplishing what I set out to do. I had my frustrations but persevered with enthusiasm till the job was completed. Good luck if you attempt to tackle the job. If you want a Master Gunsmith to the job for you, I can supply his name but it will be several months for the turn around time on the job. He is swamped with work but will be happy to take on the job.

Call Brownell's Customer Service number and ask if they have knowledge of and would recommend a pistolsmith within driving distance of you. There are many part time Armorer's and Gunsmiths that have the tools and knowledge to do your job, but they get their 'business' by word of mouth. It is hard to locate them and they can be in the next block to your house..........

Failing that I recommend Cylinder & Slide in Fremont, Nebraska.

I have no knowledge of someone in your area. The last barrel swap I had done (as opposed to doing it myself) was over five years ago and ran under $100 for the barrel swap and truing up the forcing cone.

You might call Smith & Wesson customer service and see if they will take it on. The worse they can say is no. If they do agree to the job, they'll send you a shipping label.

Diagonal Road Gun Shop in LaGrange Ohio would be my choice. Andy does first class work. Like any good 'smith you will wait a bit.

You might give Wayne Novak a call. He's in WV and if they don't do revolvers might be able to give you a lead. Alex Hamilton at Ten Ring Precision in TX could do it, but you've got shipping to contend with.

Having done a bunch of barrels professionally (long ago), it isn't a basement project. If you're in real good status with the the Big Guy upstairs, the old barrel might readily screw out and the new one right in with no fuss or bother. That generally isn't the way things turn out.

There are a whole bunch of threads on this subject, it'd be educational to read a couple.

If you have the "large" extractor rod knob, that dates your gun to earlier than a Pre Model 10 which began in 1948. How much earlier depends on whether it's the large 'mushroom' knob or large 'barrel' knob. Which do you have?

Therefore you have a 38 Military and Police if it has fixed sights.

S&W will not work on any guns w/o a stamped Model # which began after the #s were ordered in June 1957.

Does your replacement barrel you described as "...appears exactly the same, sans S/N...." have the milled notch for the "large" extractor rod knob? There will be slight additional cost to add the notch if it doesn't. Unless you have the minimal skill to file.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
