640 Pro Rear Sight Help
So I picked up a 640 Pro today and after bringing it home realized the rear sight is sitting proud of the dovetail. What would be the suggested fix? Filing on the sides or just sending it back to Smith to be refitted.
My last Smith had a bent ejector rod right out of the package, I need to stick with buying older Smiths I guess.

If it were me I think I'd send it in to S&W. You could drift it out yourself and reinstall it but it looks like if it was in the correct position it would be loose in the dovetail. I can't tell with the shadow in the picture but does the dovetail look like it's cut correctlly?

That’s a bad job.
I suspect they’ll have to replace the gun.

The 640 pro is a new gun, but without the lock. I'd send it back to the factory.

That’s very sad. Looks like they’re not replacing cutters frequently enough.

Could be an out of spec sight.
I agree with sending it back, the dovetail could be shimmed but that's still not right.

Hard to tell from the pic, but the dovetail doesn't look like it is a clean cut. The edges of the female dovetail look rounded off to me. Ruger recently sent out a bunch of GP-100s with a dovetail front sight that had a very similar problem. IIRC, they said that they were 'within spec.'

I'm sure it's just an illusion caused by my old eyes and low resolution when it's blown up but to me it looks like the forward cut on that dovetail slot is square cut.

Does to me also. I would send it back.

Sorry for not getting back to this thread sooner. I happened to notice this when I saw the rear sight was visibly off center (so is the front sight). I gave it a bit of a push with my thumb and it flew across the room. When the sight is out of the dovetail it does not look square but it's hard to tell.
Called Smith yesterday and waited on hold until 1815 PM and decided I'd just call back today. After another 15 minuted of waiting on hold today I got through and will be shipping the gun back tomorrow to Smith tomorrow.
Not too thrilled seeing as my last new S&W purchase (442) came with a bent ejector rod.
But to make myself feel better I finally crossed a P&R Model 28-2 off my list this weekend so I have something to occupy me in the meantime(see picture below). Still waiting on a holster for this one anyway that's probably a month out. Just hoping they don't replace the gun because it has an Apex kit in it and the trigger feels great after some dry/live fire.

Take out your trigger kit!!! And then send the gun back. That is unfortunate but I'm sure they'll make it right.

Too late now, it was only the mainspring and firing pin/spring. I can just get replacements from APEX or Wolff.

Quick update, this is still at S&W. Frame is being replaced and I was told it would ship out in 2 weeks max. This was 3 weeks ago......
Pretty disappointing in Smith's customer service this will likely be the last "new" model S&W I buy.

FWIW, the bottom of the dovetail cut is not flat.

Yup that's why the frame is being replaced.
