Default "repaired"gun was returned completely unusable

I got my Smith & Wesson 500 repaired and this is the condition it was sent to me in. As you noticed there's a huge Gap. The cylinder is tweaked to the left it looks like. And completely locked in place and unfunctional. I can't pull the trigger, pull the hammer or release the cylinder. This is 100% unacceptable and quite appalling that they would let something like this happen.

Looks like it was in a wreck.
Was the shipping container trashed?

@hkcavalier yes this was sent to the Smith & Wesson repair center and that's how they shipped it back with a paper that says "functionality acceptable" what a joke

Gun with sent to them with an extractor problem. The extractor would get in front of the rounds and therefore wouldn't extract. Other than that was in perfect condition. And functioned as it was supposed to

Tolerances aren't what they used to be?

Looks like a bent yoke? I would suspect the barrel of the yoke is bent because the stud is stronger and less likely to bend. Anything that puts a significant lateral force on an unopened cylinder such as whipping the cylinder open with a flip of the wrist could cause such a problem. The fix is straight forward. Looks like it needs to go back to S&W.

That's what I believe too. The problem as stated before is I sent them the gun with a perfectly straight yoke it came back like this and then they said it was acceptable functionality. Which is what I can't believe. Also the fact that I had to wait weeks to get this gun back for it to basically be a brick is absolutely ludicrous

Wow, I'm just glad it wouldn't function, especially a 500.

Yeah I'm kind of scared of it now. How am I to know that the next time they don't screw something else up that makes it explode. I hope they do right by me on this one cuz it's pretty bad.

S&W no longer has factory repair centers; everything now must be sent into the mothership. S&W states to send them nothing but the gun when sending a gun in for repair, but the OP states that he received it back in the padded pouch that he sent it back to the repair center in. Also, the OP's first post with the pictures is his first post on this forum. He also claims to have posted a Youtube video. All this before contacting S&W.

Just sayin'............

Sorry to hear of the issues you are having. Given the pictures of the condition of the returned gun I can’t hardly believe it would be returned to you in that condition. My first thought was shipping damage but you say package was in good condition. My second thought is maybe it was dropped after it left the repair center shop by the shipping department. I understand your upset (who wouldn’t be) but I would not jump to the conclusion the repair center did this. I would give S&W a chance to respond. I would be nice, calm and explain the condition. I would not be snarky or tell them you posted to YouTube before giving them a chance to make things right. Be nice, there is no reason not to be. If they don’t resolve the issue then you may be justified in being more agressive and not so nice or then posting on YouTube. I also would hope that if they do resolve your issue you would post a follow up video on YouTube. Just my 2 cents.

In case you are wondering I have had similar issues with two different gun makers. One fixed the problem and both parties remained nice and civilized. The other did not (or could not) fix the problem after five trips back to their repair group. Things started nice and civilized and degraded from there. Eventually they sent me a replacement gun and it had issues as well.

number 1. If you did a little bit of research you would know that it says put the gun in the original packaging that it came in. Since this is the 10 and a half inch barrel Smith & Wesson 500 it comes in a large padded case. I contacted Smith and Wesson and asked if that is something I should do and they said yes and then I put that into a shipping box.
Number two. What's the difference if this is my first post or not. I don't go on forums often but this is the first time I've had this happen to me. So I thought I would share on a Smith & Wesson Forum since Smith & Wesson repair center sent me the gun back in this horrible condition.
Number three. I contacted sw on an email with the links to the YouTube videos that I made showing the condition that the gun was in. That I received it in from them. in the same email I also sent pictures and a description. I only made the videos to show more detail and explain what went on.

thanks for your ideas. I planned on making a video or deleting the two that are there if they make it right. As I said I made the video just as evidence. I'm sure they will find a way to make it right.

I had a new 3" 686-6 Plus that I sent in for a hammer skip problem. They returned it exactly like yours, locked up solid.

Disappointed, sure. I immediately contacted S&W and had the shipper pick up the revolver for the return trip within hours of it's arrival. Got it back perfect. I mentioned it here at the time.

I would still be nice . My son worked for a major computer manufacturer for yrs and i can tell you , when customers came in ranting and raving they usually got shown the door if they refused to settle down and be nice . S&W didn't do it on purpose , somewhere something went wrong , maybe it was them and maybe not ( shipping ) . So , slow it down and let them fix it . Everyone should have to work in a retail position for at least 3 yrs , makes better understanding customers afterward . Regards, Paul

I'm going to openly apologize to Mister_D and accept his apolgy. After reading his private message I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he is not a drive-by troll and is extremely frustrated. I hope he calls S&W on Monday and gets some action on the issue.

I know it's a tough thing to have a firearm not work or not be perfect from the factory. I have bought cars, trucks and tools with defects, and I take it in or send them back with little more than a bit of annoyance, but with my guns, I demand perfection. I might chip, nick and ding them myself, but I don't tolerate them coming that way from the factory. I don't care if it's Springfield, S&W, Wilson or Brown. I expect perfection. There a few things at play here, one is the eye appeal aspect, next is investment aspect, and last but not least, the darn thing may have to defend you or your family. I hope you get satisfaction Mister_D. I mess up my stuff enough all by myself, I don't need them coming that way.

You know, after reading threads such as this, I feel thankful that when I sent in my treasured 5" 27-2 for a tuneup about 2-3 years ago to S&W that they did a bang up job of renewing it and didn't do a butcher job such as they did to Mister_D's 500. I've had that gun since 1974 when I bought it new and it was my very first pistol purchase. If they would have butchered it up like they did to Mister_D's 500, I would have been wanting to drive to Springfield Massachusetts and kick someone's butt.

After reading MichiganScott's reply to my pm. To start I'm going to delete the current YouTube videos as they were made in frustration. As he mentioned, I posted them before giving Smith & Wesson a chance. I will definitely be back with an update as things unfold. On Monday as I stated I will be talking to them and taking the best approach to getting my gun back the way that I know it was. In addition look for a post with some information about myself to get a glimpse into me instead of just seeming like I'm a ghost . I hope all of you have a great day otherwise. I'll be back on soon.

I feel for you, Mister D. If I had received a gun back from the factory repair shop in that kind of shape you'd be able to fry eggs on my face.

I hope they make it right.

I really doubt that Smith shipped that revolver in that condition, I have received firearms with the muzzle punched thru the front of the box, stocks broken at the wrist, bolt handles sticking out of the side of the box. That said when UPS, USP or Fed Ex delivers It is opened Immediately and looked for problems. the Firearms I received broken or scratched were in boxes that looked OK. Except the ones with gun parts poking out. Give Smith & Wesson a chance. I always take pictures of stuff I ship before and after just to keep the Post office Honest. I recently bought a revolver from a forum member and sent a check on the 7th of the month and after 10 days of worry I stopped payment and sent a new check. When he got home on the 23 the check was waiting for him, he wrote void on it and returned it to me (it took 4 days to return) Go figure where it was in the Post office for all those days.

Mister D should understand, given he is not a forum regular, that we get some "interesting" folks on here, with some "unusual" posts. Many are 'NEW." Having said that, given all of the horrendous service blunders that have come up in the last couple years...or so, not much surprises me anymore. It is hard to imagine how some of the canted barrels on revolvers could ever leave S&W. I hope this issue is resolved correctly, and thank mister d for making us aware.

A forum regular?? I don't take insinuating anyone as a liar lightly...even faceless monikers. You know the quote: fool me once shame on you>>Personally, I'd have to call BS several times before labeling a faceless name with a nasty derogatory term...and then would never do it publicly!

Welcome to a great forum...Mister_D
Hope your pistol is satisfactorily repaired...

I cannot imagine anyone at S&W allowing that gun to be shipped in that condition.

We all know the factory is not what it once was, but to have it locked up and look like that -I’d just call S&W, ask to speak with a manager, send him pictures in an email right then and stay on the phone while he/she looks at them in real time.

That is how I would do it, as that should work. And also make sure the manager can find out which person worked on that revolver so they can explain the situation as they saw it.

No way that should have gone out the door; maybe it was damaged in shipping, but that seems very unlikely. It would have to have been driven over to make it bend like that.

It will be nice to hear what happened.

This is 100% unacceptable and quite appalling that they would let something like this happen.
This came back from the factory?

First and foremost, and ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL, the person on the phone is NOT the person who worked on the pistol. HOWEVER, the person on the phone is the person you are asking for help.

Ponder this a few times before you call. Before you make any customer service call actually.

If you can’t open it to check the serial number, can you be sure it is your gun?

It's now 6/23. All that needs to be done is make a call to to the factory. Not gunsmiths or 'service centers' because they don't exist any more. If ONLY happens at the factory.

By Telephone:

(USA) 1-800-331-0852
Mon-Fri 8:00AM-6:00PM Eastern Time

By Mail:

Smith & Wesson
2100 Roosevelt Avenue
Springfield, MA 01104

They can be contacted by email, but these are by far the better ways.

If you call them, I'm sure that they will send you a shipping label with simple instructions for getting the gun back to the factory. There are a few special regulations since the item being shipped is a gun.

Please keep us advised as this is most interesting and serious to us Smith and Wesson customers.

No activity since 06-17-2018 05:49 PM. In spite of what the poster wrote as to future intentions, I suspect that he is sitting under his bridge grinning and laughing about the derision and how he pulled one over on all of us.

I should have stuck with my first opinion.

I didn't cost me anything, and the way to find out is tell them what needs to be done, then when they disappear.....
