Model 60 bobbed hammer?

Did S&W ever offer a bobbed hammer for the Mod. 60 or were they all cut down from a standard hammer? I want to modify a Mod. 60 but I want to keep the original hammer for future reference.

Never say never , but for many years was an extremely popular modifidcation. Frequently done as rectification for a damaged spur ( if you drop a revolver , it will always land on either hammer spur , or rear sight blade) . Also frequently done to purfectly good hammers to facilatate drawing from concealment , particularily pockets.

I don't know how they were made, but a few model 60s were factory DAO with spurless hammers, like the NY-1.

Short answer is yes, the factory offered bobbed hammers. I have one on a Model 60-3.

I bought one from a Federal Agent way back when and it had a bobbed hammer. Since he was in an agency that had a very tight policy and controlled weapons they carried for use, the model 60 was the authorized backup, I was surprised that he had it but he said it was ordered that way. So guess they did come like that.

I've seen them, but don't know how successful you will be locating one. I was an agency armorer for decades and back when the revolver was the std issue weapon, I modified hundreds of them for officer's who wanted their "bug's" dehorned or their off duty guns....all of my cc revolvers are despurred, model 60, 65's,24, 657, 58 & 29....just SOP for me and I have carried one of these since 1973 either as an off duty gun, back up or primary duty weapon until we transistioned to pistols in the latter part of the 80's. I still carry one of these as a retiree. For me, on a cc revolver a hammer spur is superfulous, and only good for tearing up upholstery, clothing and getting snagged on clothing in a presentation....was trained to shoot DA only, and have trained thousands during my career to do the same....been carrying & shooting them that way for 40 yrs....not going to change now.

I would think that any factory bobbed hammer is gonna be configured for DAO. Numrich (gunpartscorp.com) appears to have model 60 standard (.240") hammers in stock for $55, as well as stripped .240" hammers for $37. They list "NYCPD*SP (bobbed)" hammers at $55, but out of stock.

While it is hard to imagine a situation where cocking a Model 36 is a tactically sound decision, it is easy to imagine a situation where the hammer spur impedes quick access. I certainly preferthe Centennial for this very reason, but would get a spare hammer and bob it if I were carrying a 36.

I'm interested in this as well. Came to possess a 60-9. It has a frame mounted firing pin. I would like to get a bobbed hammer for it, but so far haven't been able to locate one. It would seem that it would be a popular part to make for people who want them for a CC gun. Any suggestions on how to obtain a bobbed hammer is appreciated?

I would just go ahead and bob the one that's on there. A replacement hammer may or may not just "drop in". And unless the gun has special collector interest (speical isssue, or rare, or old unaltered & pristine), I don't think bobbing the hammer will hurt the resale value. Some folks may not want a bobbed gun, but since it is a common-sense mod for a concealed-carry gun others like myself actually prefer them.

Yes, S&W made them and also made them for the K frames. They are not very common but I have seen them on Ebay and gunbroker for sale. Not too long ago there was a brand new one for sale on Ebay for a K. I had no interest but watched the bid go up over $100. For what it sold for, you could modify your existing hammer and be happy and save yourself a lot of green.

Just being practical spend the 50.00 to get a new one and Bob it. If you don't like it or it didn't go the way you thought it would or just don't fit you still have your original to put back in.

SMART! I know many who bobbed their original Hammer and now want the original Factory Hammer back. The easiest way to do that would would have been to simply reinstall the original (if like you) one was smart enough and had enough foresight to get a replacement to mutilate and save the original.

I sincerely doubt you will find a Factory bobbed Hammer since they are rare, but you should still be able to find a new one on Fleabay, GB or one of the other parts sellers. Minor fitting might be required but some do just drop in.

Old topic but yeah they did. I have an early(ish) 60 I bought new in 1982 or so (no dash anything ABH9XXX) and wanted to bob it maybe 2 years ago or so. I called S & W and asked for a replacement before I bobbed so I'd have one. They said don't bob the original as I would have difficulty finding another. They did have a bobbed one in stock and sold it to me for about $35. It dropped in without issue. It did make it DAO. I tried calling S & W today about another part and never could even get through to talk to anyone.
