Default Calling all S&W revolver smiths....question

Lets say someone had a 686 with a long barrel. over 6in and wanted to sometimes carry it because they love CCW'ing a revolver. If that someone found a 3 or 4in barrel, how much would he be looking at to change a barrel? AND is there a difference in the dash models? Would he have to look for a barrel for the same vintage or will any 586/686 barrel work?

Cost... it depends on how much fitment work is needed.

I have a 686 no dash (bought new) that originally was a 4" barrel. Years later, I got a "hair" about having a 6" barrel.

I found a 6" "take off" barrel on eBay, with no idea of what dash number gun it came off of.

I took the gun and the barrel to a local 'smith. Was given an estimate of "around" $100 to do the swap, including any fitting work, like turning down the barrel shoulder and adjusting the barrel/cylinder gap, sounded reasonable and I left it with an estimate of it being done in a couple of days.

I got a call from the 'smith a few hours later asking if the barrel had ever been on the gun before, I said "no" and asked why. He said that it threaded on and it torqued down with the B/C gap in spec and front sight properly clocked (in position), no other work needed... took all of 30 mins, he charged me the minimum 1 hour shop rate and off I went.

That was over 15 years ago and all is still fine.

Guess I live the life of the charmed.

The dash number should not make a difference as the thread size across the dash numbers should be standardized.

I found a simpler solution to the shortening a barrel problem. I had the barrel whacked off and resighted. I bought a 629-3 with a scope and a long barrel and realized after a bit that I wanted a shorter barreled 629 with iron sights. Total cost was right around $150 two years ago. Weigand front sight which is still available I believe. I had zero use for a 6.5" barrel so didn't mind sacrificing it and I wouldn't call a 629-3 a collectors gun.
Here's the start and finish.

I just had a 7” fitted on an original 6” 686. The 6” was a -1 and 7” Barrel was much later. Didn’t go into details but did mention some machining to get the .004 gap he wanted. Charged me $75.

Between the price of the new barrel and paying a GS to properly fit it more than likely does not warrant the cost. Cheaper and (IMO) better to sell your current 6+ inch barrel and buy another Revolver in the length you want. Just my opinion of course...... That is UNLESS the new barrel was super duper cheap (or free) and you can do it yourself.

All L frame barrels will fit all L frames (except don't know about the 2 piece ones).

Did you have the work done locally?
