Default Adding a RD Burris Fast Fire in front of rear sight possible?

I recently purchased my first 44 mag. Can a smith mount a base to the screw on the strap just forward of the rear sights? It doesn't need to be a Burris just a single pane RD that will be easier for my eyes to pick up vs a scope of smaller tube RD. Thanks!

If you remove the rear sight the frame is already drilled and tapped for a base. This is on the newer Smith & Wesson's.

It's pretty much an either/or type of deal, unless you want to drill & tap the barrel for a picatinny rail or custom mount.

My S&W was created in 2014. Are there any limitations on what type of base can be attached?

A member of the Smith & Wesson Forum, revolver_ph, makes a wonderful mount I have on three revolvers and can highly recommend.

Here's a link to a thread explaining the mounts and how to order them.

Any type of base for the early un drilled and taped N-frame that doesn’t mar the finish?

No. The fix for that is to get it drilled and tapped like the new ones.

I have used the B Square mounts, and they will not stay on anything bigger than a .22, the recoil shears off the little front screw that holds it and you will wind up having it drilled out and being re-tapped, possibly for a larger screw. I have had this happen on a K 38. They will mar the finish.

I didn't say they worked well. Just that they are available.

Had a B-square no-driil mount on a Python(357) with a 2x scope for a long time. Never had any problems.

I’ve got one of these with a Fastfire on a 686 and works very well. No issues with coming loose with full magnum loads.

Got a picture? I don't see how it would mount to a 686.

OK. That doesn't look like the one that comes up in the link with the 3 buttons on the side. I guess you have to go find the S&W specific ones.

That mount makes sense. The one with the buttons didn't.

I have this mount that I think I used on a previous 629. The front screw puts tension on the barrel rib. The long screw goes into the forward rear sight hole which is pretty tiny.
I’m hoping to mount an Ultra Dot which weighs less than 6 oz.

Good luck with that. The forward screw is going to mar your gun. Drill it, tap it, enjoy it!

That’s what I’m thinking too. I think you put a plastic or lead bb under the screw to lessen the maring. Still a couple holes under the rear sight shouldn’t matter too much to the next owner.

I would much rather have the factory pattern holes under the rear sight than a marred finish or worse yet divots in the steel. Unless you have a NIB un-fired gun with high collector value I can't see how drilling and tapping will devalue your gun. Since you're shooting it it's value is already determined.
