Hoping someone here has some experience with S&W's shop services. I shipped a Model 15-3 to Smith & Wesson for evaluation for refinishing. They received it 15 May 18, and acknowledged receipt by email. I've heard nothing now for 45 days. Is it too soon to ask them about progress toward anything?

Welcome! You can call the Performance Center for an update, but in my experience turnaround time for refinishing varies widely depending on their workload (3-9 months). Also, communication about this seems to be limited to "here is your work estimate" and "it's being shipped". Please post the "after" photos .

Call, be nice , try to get someones name so you can speak to the same person every time you call back . After a while they get to know your story and if you are a nice person will try to help.
Muster up some patience...the "dwell time" will be measured in months, not days or even weeks...it will take months.
Calling and talking to the same person may help....they get tired of talking to you but by your being so nice they can't get mad at you so may make sure your gun doesn't fall into a crack.
It's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease.....but you gotta be super nice , no fussing at the phone person.

Your gun will sit for 3 months or more before it is even looked at. Then, an estimate of the repairs and cost will be sent to you either email or snail mail. Upon your approval and payment the work will be scheduled. You will then be notified your gun is ready to ship and if using credit card it will be charged. Time from your approval of charge until ship is about 1 month.
How do I know? I just got one back. Great work and refinish(blue). There are choices of what level of refinish you want.

Sent it to S&W for rehab and they received it May 9. Got the estimate back June 11 and I got it back today, July 18.

That's from a 28-2 I got back last month. It needed some major smithing and got a matte re-blue.
