Default 686 rear sight adjustment question

So I just picked up a 686-2 4” great shape I’ve never messed much with adjusting sights on my others Smith’s previous owner had the sight cranked way to the right so I shot it as is with 158gr outback on my steel it seemed ok but I can’t leave well enough alone and when I cleaned it I centered the rear sight for windage took it out back today and put it on paper with 125gr sjhp and it was centered fine a hair left but way low so I worked it up to close to center with a total of 24 clicks seems excessively high to what I’m used to with my 629,57,28, this was at approximately 10yards mostly and I ran 130gr fn 38’s also which was a shooting high to point of aim all shooting offhand in double action. Just curious others experiences thanks for any input.

Probably just need a taller blade in the rear sight. Cheap parts, but a little tricky to do.

It’s hitting right just strange looking up so high not what I’m used to but that’s why it’s adjustable with that many clicks I’d say to use em. Thanks

In general, the lighter the load the higher the velocity usually is and will hit to a lower point of impact with the same sight picture. The reason for this is that lighter loads moving faster will exit the barrel before the muzzle has risen to its full elevation while in recoil mode.

While I do not own any Smith Revolvers produced after the mid 1990's I can say with certainty that the older and vintage models were built around and generally sighted in for 158 grain lead ammo and lighter and faster loads will shoot lower assuming one holds the same on the target.

Switch to a 158 grain bullet before changing anything on your sights.

Thanks fellas I kept track of were it was before I adjusted it so I can return quite easily and I’ll test fire with my 158gr JHP and see where I’m am. Windage is just right so that stays just didn’t wanna overthink it let’s just say if it was breathing I’d wouldn’t be after the group I shot so that’s the main thing but nice to hit those 5” steel plates too.
