Default 547 9mm in need of repair

Can anyone recommend a good smith to work on my 547? It has been thoroughly cleaned so crud is not the problem. When shells are in the cylinder it binds. I found that only two of the cylinder chambers are at fault and they right next to each other. When empty the cylinder rotates smoothly. Recommendations anyone?

Just a thought here, but you might load the cylinder and then visually check the two sticking cylinder to see if the bases of the rounds are not seated into their chambers as far as the other rounds. Maybe the extractor is pushing those two up a little higher.

More than likely the best place to send it in for repairs is S&W. They made it and it is sort of a "freak" - being a 9mm Revolver. I question how much the average LSG knows about them (although it's not Rocket Science) and would highly doubt that they would have any parts if they are needed in the repair.

The other think is your M547 might actually be under the Lifetime Warranty - I don't know when it was made.

The Lifetime Warranty apparently means nothing to S&W if they don’t want to work on your gun. They no longer support the third generation autos and most of the earlier revolvers. If they have parts and someone trained to do the work, they may honor the warranty. If not, they will not make the parts needed, and for sure aren’t going to train anyone.

Do you mean it's binding during dry cycling with empty casings, or the cylinder just doesn't rotate properly/freely with casings?

Other issues can cause rotation problems, like a misaligned or improperly fit extractor rod, misaligned yoke barrel, out of spec front or rear gauge (or both), or even crud under the extractor or inside the cylinder assembly. (the list goes on)

In additon to the above, when you say "shells", do you mean loaded rounds? If so, factory or handloads? If handloads, have you checked them with a cartridge gauge?

Im not being a wise guy here, but sell the 9mm and get a 357 4" mod-19.
547s are finicky guns. I have a have few I shoot. I mean alot.
Dont frustrate yourself, it aint worth it.

I tried three factory loads as well as my reloads at the local range. All reloads were mic'd to insure proper length of both case before loading and total length after loading. The gun was binding during all live round testing.

In a separate test I resized 6 cases in a Dillon 550 and 6 more on a RCBS Rockchucker. The problem persists.

In both tests all cases were inspected to make sure they were properly seated and an inspection of the extractor shows nothing (at least to me) to be out of alignment.

The cylinder cycles freely when it is closed with no cases in the chambers.

I will turn over to a smith to check for "misaligned or improperly fit extractor rod, misaligned yoke barrel, out of spec front or rear gauge (or both)."

Perhaps the previous owner tried the cylinder one hand wrist snap close from his favorite TV show.

THANKS for all the advice.

This guy may be close to you depending on where you live, give him a call or send an email.
I’ve been to his shop, he knows what he’s doing. His prices are very reasonable, and he’s a real gentleman.

If you send this out-of-production revolver to Smith & Wesson, there is a good possibility they will stamp a .357 with your serial number and ship the new gun to you. You will never see your 547 again.

Do you have any evidence of this happening or did you just "hear" this somewhere?

Several people on the forum have complained of this very same thing happening with .44s and such.

Can you document this or point out a specific thread or post? In the cases I have read of here S&W would contact the owner and ask if they would like a different gun as theirs was not repairable.

I find it hard to believe that S&W would just send you a gun of a different model and caliber without contacting you first. I find it even harder to believe that they would duplicate serial numbers.

I agree with the bolded.

In my case I live in the peoples republic of NY and while the serial number would match up the CALIBER is different. Trying to explain why your hard to get and easy to revoke pistol license says 9MM but the gun you have says .357 could make thing very interesting.

FWIW I have a 547!
Anxiously waiting to see a factual reply!

Found an excellent smith and picked up the 547 today. It works perfectly and he worked his magic on the trigger. Both single and double action are great. It will get a workout at the range on Friday.

Did the gunsmith say what the problem was?

It was a cylinder alignment issue. The previous owner may have played TV detective and snap closed the cylinder. I'll get some range time tomorrow. He also installed a new steel ejector in my Colt ACE. I check the ACE out tomorrow also.
