Default Re-blue by Smith&Wesson?

I am seeking input from anyone with first hand experience with re-bluing/refinishing by S&W in recent times , say the last year or two. I have read one source that suggested that Smith is currently using an "environmentally friendly" approach to bluing ; is that true? (That would be a pretty big caution flag for me...)

I figure that this is a good place to ask ... What is the current state of affairs at the "Mother Ship" in regards to bluing? Who has had that done , or knows someone who did , and how did it go?

Standing by , 'Ski.

I checked with them a few years ago. Yes, environmentally friendly. Claimed required by EPA but there are plenty of places that still do hot blueing - including Colt.

The last I read, S&W farms out all of their bluing. They did not want to make the expenditure to meet EPA hazards so they send all bluing tasks to a company that meets EPA requirements. My understanding was to meet disposal hazards, not that the bluing process had changed.

Based on what you are telling me .....

I have a S&W Highway Patrolman which needs cylinder work , and I am considering refinishing. I think that the best way to go about this is to send it to Smith for the repair work , get it back then shoot it and sit on it for a bit , then decide on the re-blue. If I do decide to go ahead with refinishing I will look elsewhere.

Thanks guys.
