Wrong strain screw ?
The trigger pull on my 3 " Model 10 is the heaviest of any of my K-frames. The strain screw head completely protrudes and cannot be screwed in flush with the frame. The revolver is from Australia.
A friend who is retired from S&W is sending me some replacement screws to try. Do you think this will help the heavy trigger pull problem ?
Thanks.

Probably will. Sounds like you have the wrong screw in there now.You can custom fit a new Strain Screw to get the perfect tension for reliability and still have a great trigger pull. Always make sure the screw is fully tightened and remove only a little of the tip at a time. Once you go too far you can't add metal back.
Test with a bunch of different types of ammo and primers for reliability. Don't go too light or misfires will happen.

Sounds like a square butt screw in a round butt gun.

I think you are probably on the right track. It is a square butt and now I am suspecting it might have a round butt screw.
Thanks.

Square butt strain screw should measure .605" OAL and .480" under the head.

You can use a headless setscrew to adjust the tension of the mainspring. You can use a trigger pull gauge to measure the tension on the hammer. Once you find the lightest reliable hammer tension + a little bit, you can make the strain screw the right length to match the hammer tension of the setscrew.
Measure the hammer pull by hooking the pull gauge under the hammer (you will have to cock it about halfway). Then gently let the hammer with hook down on the frame. Take the reading just as the hook pulls away from the frame. This method gives you a repeatable reference point.
This makes it very easy to find the right tension, you can record it for later, and only need one strain screw to get where you're going, rather than a pile of scrap ones. The setscrew size is #8-32 x 1/2" long.

I got a half dozen strain screws from my friend and with some trial and error found one that functioned perfectly. The trigger pull is markedly better.
It’s good to have friends.
