It would help if we knew if you have a revolver or an automatic, and if the revolver is a "J" frame or a "K-L" frame.

If it's an auto with a spring cup at the bottom, smoothing the inside of the spring cup/mainspring housing is more important.

Your post is confusing. The K, L, N and X frame revolvers don't have a hammer strut. They use a leaf spring and the part that attaches the spring to the hammer is called the stirrup. You're best advised to leave the stirrup alone.

The J frame has a hammer strut, they typically don't need smoothing.

Perhaps you should leave it alone.

As others have commented, it is not clear what part you are referring to. It might be easier if you would explain exactly what you are trying to achieve. Are you tuning something or are you fixing a problem?

If you search on brownells.com or gunpartscorp.com you will find complete parts schematics for your revolver. These schematics will help you find the official factory names for parts and sometimes factory part numbers as well. People on this site will be familiar with the factory part names, and some members have a surprisingly detailed familiarity with the factory part numbers too.

Did you mean a "J" frame hammer mainspring strut or as S&W prefers to call it.. a Mainspring stirrup?
So, the poster was correct, it IS a stirrup, according to S&W.

Usually the stirrup doesn't require smoothing, and polishing it to a mirror shine does nothing for it.

If it is rough for some reason, like being scarred by improper disassembly attempts, it can be smoothed up with fine grit wet or dry sand cloth.
One way of doing this is to chuck the bottom end in a drill press or a securely held hand drill and using wet or dry sand cloth in a "shoe shine" way on the rough area.

Another it to simply fold some fine sand cloth over the round strut and running the stirrup up and down the sand cloth to smooth it.

If the stirrup is heavily scarred up you can use a fine stone to smooth it out, but if it's very rough you'd be better off to just buy a new part.
Brownell's sell "J" frame stirrups for almost all the "J" frame models.

These will be brand new parts, not used....
Click on your model and click on the blue "Find all available SKU's" tab"
