Default CURRENT WARRANTY REPAIR TURNAROUND?

I sent a 26 yr old NIB M17 4" Underlug to S&W for warranty repair approx. four months ago. The gun was bought new by my dad, registered with S&W but never fired.

After shooting it, I found an abnormal amount of trigger shake... caused by either a too small trigger post or a too large trigger mounting hole... so either the trigger needs to be replaced of the trigger pivot pin needs to be pulled and a new one pressed into the frame.

yes anyone know the current turnaround time for warranty repairs?

Thanks-mog

I only have experience for brand new guns (I.e., less than a few weeks after purchase, less than a year after manufacture) and the turn around has been three weeks for one, and five for the other. I suspect it will be a LOT longer for a 26-year-old gun.

More than likely YOUR gun will wind up in the "Custom Shop" because of its age. I doubt the regular workers at the Plant's regular Repair Dept. are familiar enough with the older design to repair it properly AND more than likely they do they have access to vintage parts. Therefore if it does end up in the Custom Shop with Old-timer GS's it could take a little longer.

I can not be 100% sure my scenario is correct, but after visiting the S&W Factory multiple times over the years, this is what I would surmise.

NOTE: I always suggest this to guys who are interested in the Vintage S&W's.....

* Do the research and find out where vintage parts can be gotten. Member Armorer recently posted a list of them on the Smithing Forum here.

* Now is a good time to start learning how to work on and repair vintage models yourself - if you have the inclination, the patients, the mechanical ability and the tools. There are a few good books like the Gerry Kuhnhausen Shop guide. Don't rely too much on youtube - as some video's are proper and some are not.

* If you have no interest in learning, then take this time to find qualified and professional GS's that have a long standing reputation with vintage models.

I sent a 4" HB Model 10 revolver from 1985 back to S&W to get reblued/refurbished and although they done a superb job it was around that magic 4 month wait... The quality of the work done was worth the wait...

I think the OP should be pretty close to getting his gun back from S&W if it's already been four months. Send them a email inquiry to get a better idea of when to expect it back

Chief 38,

I have two very full toolboxes of gunsmithing tools, two well worn copies of Khunhausen's Shop Manual (including the latest edition covering MIM parts) and was the Club Armourer for my pistol club in Australia for thirteen years so I'm no novice to K, L & N frame repairs.

However, if you are willing to remove a trigger pivot pin that is 'factory press fit' into a K frame and replace & re-stake the pin, you're a better man than I...

If in fact it is the trigger mounting hole that is oversize, I would much prefer that the factory do the repair and get the sear angle engagement surfaces correct...
