Default What kind of wood are these ?

I wanted to get an opinion on what type of wood these may be. I picked them up awhile back, and need to repair a small chip in the back of one. Hopefully I can find a piece that close enough to match it, but I am uncertain as to what it is. i know they used walnut, goncalo alves and rosewood. I don't think it's goncalo alves, but it's dark enough to be rosewood or dark walnut.

Any help is always appreciated !!

Can you post a photo of the insides? The grain pattern at the top of the left panel looks like rosewood but I can't recall seeing S & W stocks of this wood with this light color and variation.

Really ? That dark ? Most of the goncalo stocks I've seen were really orange looking. The 2 sets I have are orangeish.

Ok, so after digging through my stocks and comparing, you guys are probably right. These are a bit darker but I think part of it is the finish that's on them. I appreciate it.

Sir,

Goncalo Alves can and does vary considerably in grain, hue, etc. I think that Smith was able to obtain a large amount of it which was quite consistent, as you have observed in the grips you have seen before. Take a look sometime at the pictures of it on the web; you'll see much more which resembles the grips you have pictured for us here.

Regards,
Andy

Thumbs up WOOD

Here is my Mdl 29 with ROSEWOOD COKES, I am in doubts those are Rosewood. I suspect mine were 'lunchbox' stocks.

Yeah, the rosewood seems to have a much straighter grain and much more consistent color huh ?

Not necessarily.
A tighter grain and pores are two traits of it though.

Smooth targets show the contrast and similarities even better:

Here is a more traditional grained N-frame pair:

And here is a more colorful rosewood grain K-frame contrasted side-by-side with the traditional rosewood N-frame pair:

Seconded. They appear to be very similar to this set of early factory Goncalo Alves stocks I have:

Slab sawn Goncalo Alves, most woods look quite a bit different on the face between quarter sawn, slant sawn or slab sawn.
