Default Hammer and Trigger Swap

Howdy from the hills.

Studying a swap between 2 of my model 15s of hammers and triggers.

Gun 1: Smith 15-3 (1970) 4" w/ TT and TH.

Gun 2: Smith 15-5 (1987) 6" w/ Standard Hammer/Trigger.

I want to take the TT and TH from the 15-3 and swap with the 15-5's standard trigger and hammer.

Given the age and "dash" difference, Should I run into any problems dropping these parts into place?

I have totally dismantled and replaced parts in the guts of a K frame once before and feel confident in doing it again with care and patience.

Would greatly appreciate any thoughts or points.

THANKS to all y'all !!! Bo

It SHOULD be a drop in, since you're doing both hammer and trigger.

Isn't the 6" marked M14, rather than M15?

Howdy Muley and THANKS..........

To answer.......No, it is indeed a seldom-seen model 15 w/ 6" tube in 99% condition.

I have 7 model 14s with either 6" or 8 3/8" barrels and this 15 fits right in there with its cousins.

The difference being that All 7 model 14s have TT and TH and I just wanted the 15 to match as I like the feel of the TT when plinking cans and marshmellows. Am I anal or what..............?

2nd question: I assume a TT and TH from a K frame will drop into a N frame like a model 28 if
they were both built in the 70s or 80s?

Thanks.................Bo, in center of Rattlesnake Country

Yes -- keep the trigger with the hammer it originally came with (don't mix them) and swap away.

Side note if you haven't been inside S&W revolvers a lot... remember that you don't want mainspring tension AND the side plate off at the same time, and you specifically don't want to cycle the action WITH mainspring tension with the side plate off.

Doing this puts a lot of stress on pins that are designed to be supported on both sides -- not just on one side (as they are when the side plate is off)

Triggers will interchange between K, L, and N frames. But hammers for all three frame sizes are different.
Hammer heights by frame size:

K frame, 1 ¾” in height
L frame, 1 7/8”
N frame, 2”

There's no difference between the 15-3 and -5 hammers and triggers.

There are differences in design changes, between those two models; the rear sight screw, yoke screw, and cyl gas seal. But luckily nothing to do with the action parts.

Keep the hands with the original revolvers that the hand came with. Swap the hammers and triggers but not the hands

Yes! And keep the DA hammer fly with original trigger, although not need to change in this swap.

THANKS.......jimmy, Hondo and others............appreciate your help.

THE REPORT: Just came off my gun bench.

Did the swap. The 15-5 in 6 inch is so tight (like been fired only 20 times) that I had to jimmy things out of and into place.
Then it seemed to be a little rough in cocking.

And in spite of my grinding a special screwdriver blade to remove and re-install the mainspring, one went into orbit 3 times in the process, but was lucky and found it all 3 times.

THEN............I eyeballed the triggers and hammers more closely: The TT and TH installed in the 99.8% 6" 15-5 looked "old." The case colors were gone. I looked at the older 15-3 in 4" and there were those pretty "fresh" case colored hammer and trigger.

Don't laugh, but I swapped them all back and kept things as they were.........and think I am happier that way. Wait a minute, PLEASE LAUGH !!

In reality, I have plenty of Smiths in all models and calibers to shoot. The 6-inch 15-5 is still so New that I wiped it off and returned it to safe storage as an investment ........will probably never fire it again.

As for the 15-3, it is a nickel beater that has seen a lot of use.

I gotta laugh at myself...........sort of wasted a whole afternoon

If anything, the experience of going inside of K frame guts for only my 2nd and 3rd times and then going back into them for my 4th and 5th times was good experience.

Y'all take care, Bo
