Default Messed-up cylinder slot

I have a friend who just bought a fairly nice .32-20 S&W Model 1899. One of the cylinder slots (engaged by the cylinder stop) has been boogered up and that cylinder has far too much play. The other 5 slots are OK. Can it be repaired and if so how?

You're talking about cylinder stop notches. Peening is the usual method of restoring a notch. If seriously messed up where peening won't be enough, I'd suggest checking with some restoration specialists.

I would suggest for the best possible outcome, you consider microwelding. Pullman Arms does top notch work for reasonable prices.

I passed the information about microwelding on to my friend. I talked to my usual local gunsmith about this, and he also said that the best way was to weld it and re-machine the slot - but he didn't want to attempt it.

Just be sure to polish your hammer face before doing this, will leave far less cleanup after peening.
