Default K-Frame Gripper Professional To Boot

I have a K frame Professional Gripper square butt set of grips that I have started to make a set of boot grips out of. The back is already open as they come and I have used a sharp blade to remove most of the rubber from beneath the butt. I thought some coarse grit sand paper would be the ticket to shape them into the finale fit boy was I wrong on this one. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if this will help, but I recall someone posting about modifying a set of 3-finger groove Uncle Mike's to a boot grip configuration. You may want to try searching to see if you can find it.

Also, it'll probably help if you can post pictures of your work.

Pachmayr grips are molded from real rubber, most other makers use a synthetic.

There's just isn't a good way to maker it look nice and "finished", since rubber just doesn't sand very well.

About the best I've found is to use sand paper on a block to get it as smooth as possible, then use the Pachmayr recommended Armor-All on them.

I've never tried it, but someone once recommended putting the grips in a low temp freezer and freezing them to make the rubber hard.
You can only sand a little before you have to put them back in the freezer.

I would imagine that if you had access to liquid nitrogen that would really work.
In high School I saw a teacher use liquid nitrogen to freeze pieces of car inner tube and hammer them into an oak block like nails.

Also remember, inside of Pachmayr grips is a steel shell to reinforce them. Cut into the wrong place and the liner is exposed. There's no "fixing" that.

If you can, use a belt sander/grinder with 80 grit to shape them. Go slow. Much like installing a recoil pad. 150 grit to finish.

Got them worked down to size finally. I’m pleased not the greatest looking but they feel good in the hand.

I was going to recommend a high speed grinding/cutting wheel in a medium-fine grit. It almost melts it's way through instead of sanding per se...
