29-4 spring screw
This being round grip type,is this spring screw sticking out to far.the spring under the grips looks to have the right arc.I bought this revolver new and have never adjusted this screw. It came with rubber grips then i switched to these altamonts.I like the way they look but I have not shot them yet.Im quarantined at home and doing guy retail therapy.

Yes. It should be flush or just below the frame surface. That is called the Strain screw. It puts tension on the main spring.
Screw it in until it stops. Do not over tighten as you can damage the threads in the frame. You will know when it’s in all the way. It will just stop screwing in suddenly. That’s your que to quit

I used a good fitting screw driver on the strain screw and it seems that it is all the way in.Must be the way it left the factory.

If that screw is bottomed and tight, it is the wrong screw. On my screen with your image it looks more like a cap screw but you did say you used a screwdriver on it.

Round butt frames use a shorter screw, it could be that is a strain screw for a square butt.

Likely the prior owner lost or damaged the strain screw and replaced it from his local hardware store. Check with S&W, Numrich, or Midway and get a correct replacement. Shouldn’t cost more than 3 or four dollars.

Looks like you have a strain screw for a square butt installed. The front strap on a square butt is thicker than that on a RB so the counterbore housing the much taller screw head is deeper too.
The strain screw for a RB has a much shorter head to fit with the thinner front strap and correspondingly shallower counterbore. I think you need a new p/n: 039470000
