Everything from Palmgren I've ever seen has been overpriced junk.
I have bought a lot of tools from Shars and been happy with all of it. The Shars vise is a more solid design and better built than the Palmgren one anyway.

I use a machinist drill press vise it's got more adjustments and lining up for drilling or cutting is just a lot easer.

I have a Starrett Drill Press vise (# 913 1/2) that I bought about 25 years ago. Along the way I modified it by installing a set of home made parallels that are attached with two counter-sunk machine screws so they are semi-permanently affixed. Should I want or need to remove them all I need to do is to remove a few screws and it's back to Factory Spec. This very heavy cast iron DP Vise has really served me well and although I do not know if it is still made my Starrett - I'd bet they are available on eBay if you were interested. They were available in different sizes, but this one suited my needs well.
I also have a cheap "junker" that someone gave me years ago - that I loan out from time to time or use outside or as just another way to hold something.
Palmgren has always been a respectable name in DP vises and although I've never owned one I know people who do and they seem happy.
BTW I find the heavier the vise the more stable it is. The cheap junker I have is very light weight and is not even in the same ball park as the heavy Starrett.

IMHO, the 'Shars' is the best and the cheapest. IF your need for precision is at a higher level....haunt ebay and other places like that until you find a Starrett. Way back when....I hesitated at the buy-in price for a Starrett so bought a large Taiwan made vice. I wound up putting in so many hours rebuilding all moving aspects of that vice that I should have paid the Starrett price and only cried once.

Happy with the Shars vise on my mill. Hope you’re not planning to use a drill press for a mill. Very hard to get satisfactory results.

Hmmm, I honestly can't remember what I paid for my Starrett 25 years ago but as you say - "they ain't cheap". What ever I did pay I certainly got my money's worth since I use it every week at least once or twice - many times more if I'm working on a project. What I do like about the Starrett (both then & now) is it is one of the heaviest DP vises out there and so so stable. I also love the quick rotating beefy handle which to me allows quick adjustments and really tight gripping strength.
NOTE:
I believe the NEW Palmgren vises are made in China - and so don't expect the same quality as the older USA made ones. If you are serious about quality you might want to hunt down a vintage model made here. Unless someone has drilled holes in it or ground it up badly, there's not much to go wrong with one if it was not abused.

You might check out littlemachineshop.com. They sell several flavors of vises. They are all Chinese but for the money they are not bad at all.

I think Shars is closed at the moment. Saw somewhere that they may reopen in a week or so.
