Default Which 637 Trigger Spring

I have 2 637's that my wife carries one and the other she keeps in her vehicle and they both had a trigger pull of over 12 lbs. I took them to a gunsmith and asked him to try and get them down to 8 or 9 lbs if he could without having light primer strikes. He said he would put in Apex springs and firing pin. When I picked up the guns he took them outside and fired them and came back and said they had good primer strikes. He didn't say what pound trigger pull they had and when I got home I measured them and they both were still over 12 lbs. I purchased 12 -16 lb springs from Wolfe and I was needing to know what spring I should start with. Also, I have a model 19 and 586 and I have bought springs for them and was wondering what spring I should start with on these.

Generally speaking you start low, check for proper function and then check for reliable ignition. If you don't have it, go up a notch. If you have a choice on test ammo-primers, go for CCI. They are generally considered to be the "hardest" available and the most likely to give ignition problems if they are going to occur.

The rate of the rebound slide spring has no effect on the viability of primer strikes inflicted by the hammer and mainspring.

Changing the rebound spring to a lighter, aftermarket spring will change (lighten) the trigger pull weight both in double and single action. However, if the chosen/installed rebound spring rate is too low, it will result in sluggish or incomplete trigger return which can cause reliability problems and stoppages.

Lighter rebound springs can also result in lighter single action pull rates, so be sure to verify not only the viability of the trigger return, but also measure the single action with a quality trigger pull gauge. This is especially true in J-frame models that are SA capable. As always, be sure to function check the altered action using live ammunition. S&W's recommended single action pull rate is 3 pounds.

Remember also that modification of the factory springs can effect reliability. To help mitigate potential issues, keep all firearms, especially ones used for personal protection, well maintained and clean....and the gauges within specifications, especially the rear gauge or "headspace". It may well be prudent not to modify or alter spring rates in duty or carry guns. This is a critical decision that will have to be made by each gun owner.
