Default CS9 won’t slingshot

Hello all
Just picked up a nice blue CS9 and after a thorough cleaning have been running it thru it’s paces. I had one in 40 but let it go a few years back and it would slingshot, but this one will not. Is there any rhyme or reason why one will and another won’t? Would love
for this one to work like my previous one.
Thoughts or fixes?
Thanks in advance!

Maybe it needs some lube on the slide rails and barrel bushing?

I would replace the recoil spring, as a rule, I do with any semi unless brand new.
I feel the small cost provides a little assurance that we are starting off in a relatively right direction. No way to tell a round count or even correct spring part when you're not the original owner.

Your post got me thinking so I tried my CS 9 & 45, they both ran home when racked.

Is the slide stop plunger making proper contact with the sideplate?

I'm thinking that if won't sling shot, when properly done, it won't cycle live rounds either. Are you perhaps riding the slide when you rack the slide? How do you get the first round in the chamber then?

Well it came with four mags so I tried a different one and what do ya know?
Instant fix! A new recoil spring is a great idea, so will order one. The gun was fairly dirty so maybe the mag I was trying may need a good cleaning and spring as well. Now if the slide stop would be a one finger drop, I’d be on my way to happiness!

Your slide stop is just that, a stop and not a slide release. If it wears so much it does release (one finger), you will be needing a new one fitted.

Is this peculiar to this gun? I have a few other semi’s that came new that will drop the slide easily with one finger. Thx!

Are you trying to "slingshot" it, with an empty magazine
in place?

You know, I was so excited to get it, that’s exactly what I did!
Ugh...anyway, dilemma solved and still curious about an easier slide stop. Thx!

The slide will be more difficult (significantly) to release with an empty magazine in place than with a loaded one.
And there is great debate on whether to use it only as a stop and slingshot the slide on a reload or to use it to release the slide upon reload.
I am firmly in the “uses this lever to drop the slide and chamber a round during a reload” camp.
I am told that this technique is not just wrong but pure heresy and I should be stoned for it.
I will stick with it.
Try your slide release with a loaded magazine and you will find it to be much easier.

Ive been looking at the internals of this and it appears that the recoil guide rod has an extension that rides on the slide release shaft and that the shaft is machined to ride this extension and provide the necessary pressure to hold the slide release in the frame plus provide torque to the slide release when its applied.
I’m curious if a slight mod to the shaft at the machined area will free up enough pressure so it can be used as a slide release.

When the magazine is empty, the mag spring pushes the mag follower up against the slide stop/release lever to lock the slide open after the last round.

With rounds in the mag, the follower doesn't touch the lever and the effort required to move it drops noticeably.

BTW, you must be a southpaw because us "northpaws" use a thumb instead of a finger to drop the slide.

Just got a CS9, myself.

Glad to know there is at least one other in the St. Louis area.

John

P.S. Smoothing the plastic tip of the guide rod plunger where it bears against the slide stop lever may reduce the force needed to move the lever.

John-I hope to get into this fairly soon, so I’ll update you with my results. Thanks buddy!
