Can't get the slide off an M&P
Never had this problem before. I have had the slide off this gun at least once before without any problem that I recall. Could the RSA be out of it's seat? Also, this gun, a pre-2.0, seems to have a magazine safety. It will not snap the striker with the magazine removed. Can this feature be easily removed?
With the trigger snapped and the takedown lever in the down position, the slide goes forward about an eighth of an inch and stops. Any suggestions?

I usually lock the slide back with an empty magazine inserted.....remove the magazine, push down the yellow sear release lever, and then rotate the slide release lever to the "down position"....then carefully release the slide using the slide release.....and pull the slide off.
(the proper takedown/field strip procedure is in your owner's manual)
There is no magazine safety on the gun.

After I posted this, I remembered that my gunsmith friend is an M&P armorer. I called him and he told me to remove the back plate and then the striker assembly. Did that and the slide came off just like it should. The RSA appears to be working fine and in place. Since then I have assembled it and field stripped it 2 more times and it worked fine. Have no idea what the problem was. Thanks for the reply.

You have to be careful with the sear release lever. Watch out for over travel and it getting caught up in the spring and pushed to the side

It appears there is a magazine safety on this one. It will not fire without a magazine in place. I'll try to take a pic of the mag safety lever tomorrow.
Edit: Pic of the magazine safety lever. The insertion of the magazine pushes this lever up allowing the striker to snap. With the magazine removed, the trigger can be pulled, but it does not engage the striker.

Uh, from personal experience, it does help to hold the take down latch in the down position while trying to remove the slide.
The 1.0 could come with or without a magazine safety. I carried duty guns with magazine safeties 1992-2015 without any problems. Wasn't aware of anyone having problems with them. But, it's yours.
BTW, the reason the sear release lever is there is so you don't have to touch the trigger during field stripping.

Yes, I know, but it is much easier to pull the trigger, and I found that does not work with the magazine removed. I just have to modify my normal procedure for this one.
