I have a Baby Russian in very fine shape. The only thing is that occasionally, when opening the cylinder, the extractor doesn’t retract all the way (see photo). I have disassembled the cylinder and cleaned and polished all the parts. From looking at the diagram in my Chicoine manual (other photo) I suspect the spring labeled 122b may be a little tired after 157 years. It also looks like there isn’t a way to change that spring. Does anyone have an idea about how to rejuvenate it? It isn’t a critical issue, but I would just like to have it in like new working order.

Stretch the spring and re-install. If that helps, the spring has lost tension. Stretching won't last long but at least you'll have located the issue. Search for a replacement or a generic spring with similar wire dimension, overall length and coil diameter.

Has the gun been re-nickel plated? If so, the nickel adds dimension to the metal surfaces so the parts could be too tight and binding, causing the issue. Reduce contact surface area by sanding with 2000 grit paper on a flat surface.

Referencing the diagram in the Chicoine manual; when the cylinder was cleaned was the barrel of the Base Pin (#113) cleaned? Also, #125B and C should be cleaned and oiled. My bet is congealed oil or WD 40 could be causing the problem and not the spring.

Part #122D will unscrew from the Extractor Catch Pin (#122C). Be sure to place empty shells in the cylinder prior to unscrewing.

The manual had implied that #122D extractor rack nut and 122C extractor rack screw shouldn't be disassembled after leaving the factory, but knowing it can be done is half the battle. I got it apart and the spring was in bad shape. Now I will be looking for a replacement. Thanks very much for the help.
